Dhaka, June 10 (PTI) Bangladesh's military-backed government has imposed a gag order on former premier Sheikh Hasina till she leaves for the US and denied her permission to visit the grave of her father, the country's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, her party claimed today.
The government yesterday announced that it will release Hasina so that she can undergo treatment abroad, nearly 11 months after the Awami League chief was arrested under its massive anti-graft drive.
"The government does not want her to talk to anyone in public before she leaves the country," a senior party leader, who wished to remain anonymous, told PTI.
Authorities have nearly finalised formalities to send the 60-year-old Hasina leader for treatment in next two days, officials and party sources said.
Party sources said "a special flight of Singapore Airlines was arranged to fly her out tomorrow evening".
However, the Daily Star newspaper quoted "highly placed" sources in the interim government as saying that the ailing ex-premier could leave the country on June 12.
Awami League insiders said Hasina wanted to visit her ancestral home to offer prayers at the grave her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in southwestern Gopalganj before leaving for the US but the government wanted her to go straight to the airport from the jail and board the plane.
Deputy inspector general of the prisons Major Shamsul Haider Siddiqui visited Hasina at the makeshift jail in Parliament complex yesterday but said they had not received any administrative order on her release. PTI
