[vinnomot] Secular Perspective

ISLAM-MUSLIMS AND TERRORISM

Asghar Ali Engineer

(Secular Perspective April 16-30, 2008)

Islam is being invariably associated with terrorism both in media as well as in political circles, especially in Western countries. When they hear it being condemned by Muslim theologians, it is celebrated as something unusual. It is strange irony of both misunderstanding and motivated propaganda that if a small band of Osama's followers give call for jihad, it is taken as authentic Islamic call and if it is condemned by mainstream Islamic theologians, it is accepted with mixed feelings of celebration and skepticism. The mainstream condemnation of terrorism is somehow not accepted with conviction.

When the Darul Ulum Deoband, a leading Islamic seminary in Asia, held an anti-terrorism conference the media spotlighted it and number of articles and editorials were written in mainstream media. There was underlying skepticism that how thousands of 'Ulamas and imams could gather together in such large numbers, to denounce terrorism. In fact when media unceasingly targeted Islam for terrorism, these 'Ulamas thought it necessary to do so to convince their non-Muslim friends that Islam does not stand for terrorism.

In fact it was hardly necessary to do so as all Muslim theologians know fully well that there is no link, whatsoever, between Islam and terrorism but due to such continuing attacks, Muslim theologians had to issue a declaration condemning terrorism. Let it be noted that not only Osama bin Laden but not a single leading member of Al-Qaida is a qualified theologian. They are all modern educated youth or politicians. Among Taliban too, there is no theologian of any credible standing. Some of them may be product of madrasas in North West Frontier province of Pakistan but they never went for higher Islamic studies. They never got beyond preliminary Islamic education. It was their political bosses who decided course of action and formulated policies invoking 'jihad' to justify their acts of terrorism.

Never any major theologian ever justified acts of terrorism. One of major Islamic thinker and theologian from West Asia issued any fatwa approving of terrorism as jihad. Yusuf Qardawi, a well-known theologian and highly respected by orthodox Muslims, condemned terrorism and suicide bombing killing of innocent people. A conference of leading Muslim scholars also condemned suicide bombing as un-Islamic. Qur'an is so clear on the issue along with hadith literature that save on political grounds, no one can approve of acts of terrorism.

There are in all 41 verses in Qur'an on jihad and not a single verse uses it for war or violence. In early twentieth century when terrorism, like today, was not the issue, a noted scholar of Islam Maulavi Chiragh Ali wrote a scholarly book on Jihad and showed that not even once word jihad has been used for war or violence in Qur'an. It is really a landmark work for those who want to understand meaning of jihad in Qur'an.

The prophet of Islam (PBUH) himself never fought any war of aggression; he fought battles only in defense. Most of the battles Prophet fought was in and around Madina where he had migrated to, to escape severe prosecution from his and Islam's enemies in Mecca. It is opponents of Islam who attacked Madina and Prophet fought back. He followed the injunction of the Qur'an, "And fight in the way of Allah those who fight against you but be not aggressive.  Surely Allah does not love aggressors. (2:190)

This Qur'anic verse is self-explanatory and does not need any elaboration. How prophet could have violated this injunction from high on in his own lifetime?  The real problem is that one fails to distinguish what is theological and what is political. Many Muslims had their own political interests and they conveniently invoked doctrine of jihad for their political project as Osama bin Laden has been doing in our own times.

The invocation of jihad for political purposes is post-Qur'anic development. The Prophet would have never approved it. Those who kept away from political struggle for power like Sufis, gave jihad a very different meaning. According to Sufis love and peace is the basis of Islam and jihad is spiritual struggle to control ones desires. In other words real jihad is war against ones own desires, as it is selfish desires which require human beings to resort to violence.

In fact Sufis always kept themselves away from political power struggle and believed in leading peaceful life and emphasized doctrine of sulh-i-kul (total peace and peace with all). Since they never involved themselves in political power struggle they led simple life and busied themselves in suppressing their desires and tried to achieve what Qur'an calls nafs mutma'innah (i.e. peaceful and satisfied soul). This could be possible only if one controlled ones desires.

It was Sufi Islam, which was most popular among the masses, as Muslim masses also had nothing to do with wars for political domination. Sufis believed in controlling themselves rather than control others. One needs violence only when one wants to control others, rather than oneself. Since Sufis controlled themselves they avoided violence and politicians desire to control others and hence justify use of violence.

All empire builders use violence and then justify it in the name of religion or patriotism or security. America today uses violence on largest scale imaginable and causes havoc because it wants to control whole word for its material resources. It attacked Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam before, only to control oil and other resources. And as Vietnamis were forced to fight in their own way now Osama and their followers are fighting against America.

Of course there is big difference between Vietnam's fight against American aggression and Osama bin Laden's use of violence. Vietnam was a country and it was defending itself and Osama is a fugitive from Saudi, represents no country and leads a group founded by him al-Qaida and uses hit and run tactics and involves innocent citizens in his attacks. Osama has not been authorized by any country, much less by any religious authority, to attack All leading theologians always condemned him for his terrorism.

The problem with media is it never goes in depth. It has no time for it. Its news is related to events and particularly negative events. What we call investigative journalism is rare and again in depth analysis appeals to intellectuals, not to average readers. Then add to this hostile attitude, political agenda of certain vested interests, Zionist lobby in USA and USA's own justification of war of aggression against Muslim countries and one can understand why western media projects Islam as religion of jihad and terrorism.

There is great need to understand various parallel trends in the Islamic world today. Media reporting and statements of certain political leaders has developed a stereotype that Muslims are essentially jihadis and united in their fight against non-Muslims. When we are hostile to a community or a nation, we homogenize it and look for negative traits ignoring diversity and complexities.

It is no different when it comes to Islam and Muslims. Since theologians tend to speak of Islam and not Islams, a message goes that there is one single understanding of Islam and all Muslims fall in line with this theological Islam. Sociological and cultural differences in understanding of Islam is totally ignored. Apart from Sufis there are several Muslim sects who do not approve of use of violence as integral part of Islam.

It would be of great interest to know that among all other Islamic sects Isma'ilis consider jihad as one of the seven pillars of Islam (generally Muslims believe in five pillars) as at one time in history Ismailis were involved in long struggle for power with Abbasids and yet today Ismaili communities throughout the world are most peaceful communities. This clearly shows that violence is political, not religious necessity.

Christians too, despite Biblical doctrine of love and presenting other cheek if slapped on one cheek, came out with the theory of 'Holy War' during crusades and the Geeta pronounced concept of dharmayuddha. We find so much violence in Buddhist countries like Sri Lanka and Thailand. Thus it would be seen that all religions talk of love and peace and all religions permit use of violence in defense. But the followers often misuse the concept of defensive violence for aggressive purposes.

Media may have its own compulsions, politicians may have their own needs, but scholars should not buy their formulations. They must fight their own prejudices and go for in depth understanding of issues. Intellectuals and scholars should be committed to quest for truth as peace and non-violence is not possible without truth. Gandhiji insisted on truth and even said truth is God in order to promote peace and no-violence.

War needs propaganda for its justification and propaganda is based on half-truths and outright lies and peace needs truth and nothing but truth. It is quest for truth which brings peace of soul – nafs-i-mutma'innah or shanty. Desire for controlling others and political power creates unrest and violence. Today Middle East is a war torn zone as it sits over unlimited source of oil. It is control over oil which tempts America to attack Arab countries and people like Osama indulge in reactive violence. Terrorism is reactive violence whereas state violence is active violence. Thus terrorism is not all about jihad but reaction to American violence for its lust for oil.

[vinnomot] Torture on female student DU : Reply from an alligned blogger from Canada

Hope Shima Islam will get justice and the perpetrators of this horrendous crime on her will be punished

I am well aware of the activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, student front of the Awami League, beat up the university girl student. It was behaviour that was as reprehensible as it was unwarranted, for it smacks of the authoritarian tendencies among certain classes of student leaders and cadres which have regularly undermined efforts to establish a proper democratic order. That these activists could pounce on these young female student, themselves students of the university, without anyone reining them in is unbelievable. I have to register my protest at the way that female student has been subjected to humiliation and assault by the student cadres of Bangladesh Chhatra League. Such behaviour on the part of a section of unruly students goes against the glorious traditions of Dhaka University, which has earned a coveted place in the history of Bangladesh. It is action which militates against the heritage we associate with DU.

Assaults on female students have been a regular occurrence in Bangladesh for the last many years. There have been the many instances when media and civil society watchdogs have noted with deep dissatisfaction the impunity with which female students have been pounced on.

A free exercise of women in student and national politics is a prerequisite to the proper working of a democracy. If it is democratic values we seek to uphold, let that task begin through recognising and upholding their freedom without borders. Meanwhile, I share the sentiments of those who have demanded that the elements responsible for the assault on the young female student at Dhaka University be identified and penalised for their manifestly culpable act.

Politics and assault do not go hand in hand!

With warmest regards,

[vinnomot] Alia Sabur: Guinness names Northport teen world's youngest professor

Guinness names Northport teen world's youngest professor

"The nice thing about pessimism is that you are constantly being either
proven right or pleasantly surprised." G. F. Will

A Long Island whiz kid who left fourth grade to start college at SUNY Stony Brook has become the youngest college professor in history - at 18.
The Guinness Book of World Records is officially recognizing Alia Sabur, who on Feb. 19 was appointed a full-time faculty professor of cell science in the Department of Advanced Technology Fusion at Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea.

Sabur "just became the youngest professor in the history of the world, breaking a 300-year-old record," a Guinness spokesman said. He said Alia broke the record set in the year 1717 by 19-year-old professor Colin Maclaurin, a protégé of Isaac Newton.

"It's really a great honor to be in the company of such great scientists," Sabur, who has since turned 19, told The Post by phone from Louisiana, where she is helping with relief efforts by teaching at the Katrina-ravaged Southern University at New Orleans.

"It's really exciting and it's also a challenge because, obviously, when you get awards and recognition for being so young - you have to live up to the expectations, and I do hope I can do that," Sabur said.

Konkuk University spokesman Choon Ho Kim said, "We are all very excited to welcome Alia Sabur. Alia is quite a unique individual and we are looking forward to her making great contributions at our university."

Sabur, a clarinetist who for good measure is a musical prodigy, will begin her physics research and teaching at Konkuk next month.

Sabur added that "there were some ruffled feathers" on the first day of classes in New Orleans but that the students her age were often more accepting of her than the older adult students - all of whom were surprised to see that their physics professor was a cute teenager.

"Oh, my God," said one adult female student. "I have kids your age and you're teaching my class." Sabur replied, "Well, you know, this is how old I am. I can't help that." "I can't believe you're our age," laughed one student. "That's so cool."

Sabur encouraged those with problems to give her a chance - and told them they could drop her course later, if her age still bothered them. "Nobody left my class," Sabur said. "We have a good rapport."

Sabur, who got her BA at 14, would be a freshman in college this year if she hadn't jumped ahead eight grades when she was 10.

Professor Sabur cringed when asked the inevitable question: Does she have a boyfriend?

"I'm accepting applications," Sabur quipped, with a smile. She said she does have friends from New York and from Philadelphia, where she studied at Drexel University - but her travel and killer schedule leave less time for a complete social life at the moment.

The youngest university professor is Alia Sabur (USA, b. 22 February 1989). She was appointed as a full-time faculty Professor at Konkuk University, Seoul, South Korea as Research Liaison with Stony Brook University (New York, USA) with effect from 19 February 2008, aged 18 years 362 days.

[vinnomot] Why we become racist!

The Power to distinguish between what's good or bad is found in every living Specie. At Secondary stage of this comes distinguishing between who are we and who are they. All Specie feel safe amongst their own kind so do we. All Specie feel un-comfortable if stuck in the middle of hostile specie of another kind because of perception of possible harm.

Do all Animals hate Tigers?
No but they are always scared of them. Do all Non Moslism hate Moslims?
No but they are now scared of them. Scare can convert in to hate because we start taking precautions against the one's we are scared of and it can turn in to plain hate later.

In brief, very good observation Dr. Pal!

It is difficult to think of a civilization which is not racist--question is why a Hindu becomes racist against Muslims or a Muslim becomes racist against Hindus.

I was reading this article which was related to racism in America but the context and the analysis can be expanded in Hindu-Muslim communal ism in South Asia as well.

Let summarize the result of scientific studies:

(1) Study is showing brainwashing for hatred is done at impressionable age of 10-15
(2) Less educated, less intelligent people are more racist
(3) Parent's education matters
(4) Students with natural science background are less racist

There are many who may think this is an outgrowth of religious text or religious culture, but religious text /practice is also an outcome of evolution of a society. That's why no religious book is free from racism the way we understand it today. However, research is definitely indicating we are become racist when we become ignorant about others. All cultures, all race, all religions have their positive and negative side of the history.  Pride that we take in our race may not be as bad thing if we understand and learn to respect other races as well.

Research on this field is extremely clear that whoever is inclined to think they are superior just because they belong to a certain race or religion--is definitely less educated, brainwashed by the family and idiot to a great extetnt.

WHY DO RACISTS HAVE LOW IQs?

Studies going back over 50 years have repeatedly arrived at the same conclusion -- racists have lower IQs than non-racists. The average intelligence quotient (IQ) of all members of the human race is 100 on the Stanford-Binet scale, as illustrated in the bell curves in the figure below. The average IQ of racists is up to 4 IQ points less than this (Montagu 1952 & 1988, Allport 1946, Frenkel-Brunswick and Sanford 1945). The reasons this is true are not entirely clear. Does racism attract the unintelligent or do the unintelligent default into racist mentalities? An exploration of this phenomenon can be most informative.
Since the average IQ of a racist is less than the average, racists have two-digit IQs, while normal people have three-digit IQs, on the average. This applies to Nazi skinheads, American Nazis, the oxymoronic Aryan supremacists, Christian Identity fanatics, anti-semites, non-denominational bigots, and other such social rejects. The figure above is based on a standard deviation of 10, and is normalized for matching populations.
Many studies have explored the psychology of racism and the familial and social backgrounds of racists. Some interesting generalities can be extracted from these studies, including the fact that racists tend to be conservatives, conformists, Republicans, and hypochondriacs. The high incidence of conservatism, conformism, and Republicanism are all related phenomena. That is, one would expect a conformist to be a conservative, and a conservative to be a Republican, and a Republican to be a conformist, etc. But, why would they tend to be hypochondriacs? Perhaps they blame their body parts for imaginary illnesses in the same way they blame parts of society for imaginary social illnesses.
The arguments of racism have been demonstrated time and again to be illogical and irrational. For example, racists claim that so-called white people are "superior" to so-called black people. Ignoring for the moment the inability of science to draw a sharp line between those who are subjectively considered to be white and those who are subjectively considered to be black, lets consider the claims of superiority by racist supremacists.
As we look around us in America today we see a country full of diversity in which American blacks and other citizens of non-European descent excel in all the arts and sciences, in all aspects of business, in all political arenas, and in all athletics and other social activities. From our military commanders, to our religious and political leaders, to our star athletes both Olympic and professional, to our fastest-growing independent businesses, and in all genres of the entertainments fields -- art, music, acting, directing, film-making, etc. -- we witness a growing disproportionate dominance of non-whites, and this in spite of centuries of oppression and the continued denial of equal opportunities. Their successes are undeniable and ubiquitous, and yet the racists of our times act as if they are completely blind to this manifest proof that superiority of whites is a dying mirage.
Figure 2 shows how prejudice tends to be a function of parents' college education. Obviously the more educated the parents are, the less likely their children are to become prejudiced. Again we see a correlation of both intelligence and education with normality, while the lack of education and intelligence is associated with bigotry.
Figure 1 shows the percentage of each gender that tends towards racism, based on a study by Allport and Kramer in 1946. This chart is unlikely to surprise anyone for a number of reasons. First, women are, in general, more sociable and not inclined to be aggressive. Males, on the other hand, tend to seek outlets for aggression, and racism is a convenient one. Males, furthermore, have a higher incidence of idiocy and mental deficiency than do females. That is, females tend to be more normal than males and are less inclined to both mental extremes and behavioral extremes.
Racists wear horse's blinders at the sight of the media heroes of our age -- Muhammed Ali, Martin Luther King, Michael Jordan, Condoleeza Rice, the Williams sisters, Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds, Colin Powell, Janet and LaToya Jackson, Sidney Poiter and Samuel Jackson, Sammy Sosa, Michael Johnson, the list goes on endlessly. They are deaf to the sound of world records regularly being shattered. They are dumb in their speech when asked to explain such obvious contradictions. Are racists deaf, dumb, and blind, or are they simply of such limited intelligence that they cannot recognize the truth when it is placed in bright lights before them?
Figure 3 shows the variation of prejudice as measured among the college students of different majors in 1946. Obviously the Natural Sciences seem to protect against the false beliefs of racism better than the Liberal Arts. Why this should be is unclear, and may have more to do with the type of students who are attracted to Natural Science, which is considered a more challenging major.
Let's consider some examples of what passes for intelligence in the sub-society of what is truly an oxymoron, Aryan supremacy. Even the word "Aryan" is itself a mockery of the truth. The Aryan race doesn't exist, and has never existed. It is a myth invented by the Nazis to promote politically expedient propaganda. Hitler himself admitted that he knew there never were any Aryans, and that the notion merely served Nazi purposes, no more. All Aryan supremacists stand naked in the light of truth, but are unable to comprehend the fact that they have no clothes. Is it due to mentally deficiency, or are they really aware of this false myth? It's hard to say for sure, but their limited intelligence is certainly a factor in their confusion.
Figure 4 illustrates the fact that prejudice is acquired at a young age. The mean age for the onset of prejudice is about 12. This is a most impressionable age and is the appropriate time to educate the young and immunize them against hatred for life. They should be told everything science knows about race and everything history tells us about racism.
In America's war against terrorism, we should not forget about the domestic terrorists that have sprouted in our own backyard. Nazis, skinheads, and other bigots are anti-American by their very nature. If America is a nation of all races, religions, and cultures, then the enemies of any of those races, religions, and cultures are enemies of America. The attempts on the part of Nazi skinheads and the KKK to intimidate or encourage acts of violence against innocent people because of their race or creed is terrorism by definition. Once al Qaeda has been shut down, it would be prudent to focus America's attention on cleaning up all the nests of racist extremists that are festering inside our own borders. They are all just terrorists waiting to commit an act against Americans.
Some of the more radical anti-racist groups say that the only way to change a racist's mind is with a shotgun blast to the head. We at SAYAR disagree that violence is a proper response to what is essentially a mental disease. We believe that education is the key to erasing racism, and that this could be accomplished within the space of a single generation if we simply show children the light of truth, and dispel the darkness of ignorance.

[vinnomot] Brands in garment and knitwear industry - public should get a piece of the PIE

Brands in garment and knitwear industry - public should get a piece of the PIE
At a time when government has started responding to the genuine needs of the businessman, the general public should demand more accountability, result and service from our businessmen. BBBF should take note.

I wanted to start this article with something like this: businessman should get in business and learn how to use their brains in addition to utilize the competitive advantages that they get for free. For free? Yes, its the cheap labor that they have been capitalizing on so far, its time to go beyond the traditional competitive mindset and produce some result. However, then there mind be another hue and cry from this community that their confidence is being hampered as it is the case in many issues with this community of ours (which has been whining for sometime now).

So, for the sake of improving the tone in our public discourse, I decided to rephrase the article as follows. Hopefully, the business will hear the message embedded before its too late. We all know what happens when a group of professionals fail to respond to the need of the time and serve the people's aspiration. Here is the rephrased article for your reading:

Bangladesh earns a huge amount of forex from garments and knitwear industry.

If I ask you to mention few brand names from these two industry, how many can you mention?

Moreover, what do they do well if there are some big garment industry? Can you distinguish one industry from the other looking at their products other than the fact that they are from Bangladesh? In other words, they have become big industries - but how? Did they learn to use their brain or did they just took advantage of being from Bangladesh? You may say - well, whats wrong with from being Bangladesh? No, No, we are not saying that there is something wrong with being from Bangladesh. Actually, being from Bangladesh brings some advantages for these businesses. They get cheap labour. And they get easy access to foreign markets. Using these two  advantage being awarded by their  countrymen, they do business. Its all well. It should be a starting point. They should not stop there. Value addition should end with a creation of popular brands at the product level. Let us ask a easy question plainly - to our NRB members. When you go to a retain store of any kind in North America or Europe (two major export markets for our garment and knitwear industries), can you readily say that a certain product is from Bangladesh without looking at the "Made in Bangladesh" tag? It would be very surprising if some of you answer this question in the affirmative. It should be a taken as a challenge by our business community to change this scenario within a couple of days. We should establish at least few brand names that can be recognized without looking at the tag.

Next issue that we want to raise is related to the other issue. If it has been so far the case that success is coming from the cheap labour and the national level preferential treatment, what has the businessmen done to give back? I know what some of you might say - well, they are providing employment. True, for many working women and men, they have been helpful. But those are barely enough. These business houses that are earning billions of takas, they should have a much better trackrecord of giving back to the society. Moreover, they should also share their wealth with their nation. Their should be a cap-limit where the companies will be asked to offer ownership to the public through IPO.

Now many would also disagree on this issue. However, if these business houses offer public share and raise additional funding, they can use that additional resources to invest in creating brands of their own - and thereby addressing both of the limitations that we raised in the previous two paragraph. Hopefully, it will be done sooner than later.

If you thought some of the ideas are worth of your reading time, please forward it to others. If you have an ear to the columinsts in regular traditional media, please forward it to them. If you have an ear to the journalists and news editors of the electronic media, discuss it with them. Hope they would look at the suggestions and give due diligence.

Thanks for your time,
Innovation Line
