[vinnomot] Obama's other Muslim problem

Obama's other Muslim problem
By Mark Levine, Middle East historian
Barack Obama, the Democrats' presidential candidate, speaks at a town hall meeting at Kaukauna High School, Wisconsin on June 12 [GALLO/GETTY]
As soon as Barack Obama rose to the top of the field of Democratic presidential contenders, he developed a "Muslim problem" based on false accusations that he is, or once was, a Muslim.
There is little doubt that these accusations will be raised again, however unfairly, when Obama squares off against John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, in November's election.
But if we were to assume that Obama overcomes this and other obstacles to win his historic bid for the White House, a far more serious Muslim problem awaits "President" Obama: A majority of the world's 1.4 billion Muslims have an utter lack of trust in the US.
Senator Obama's experience of living in a Muslim country (Indonesia, where he attended school during his childhood), along with his relative youthfulness and message of hope, have the potential to heal this rift, however.
He has the merits which can energise young Muslims in the same way he has inspired millions of young Americans.
Comprehensive changes required
But this potential will not easily be realised, partially because of the ill-advised policies of the Bush administration and their impact on the Muslim world.
Most of the Generations X, Y Muslims I know, from Morocco to Pakistan, will not be swayed by Obama's lofty rhetoric unless it is backed by comprehensive changes in US foreign policy.
Indeed, the young and educated citizens of the Muslim majority world are more politically sophisticated and historically knowledgeable of Washington's foreign policy than their generational cohorts in the US.
They feel deeply and negatively impacted by these policies as they try to find coherence and stability in the increasingly chaotic post-9/11 landscape.
Islamic demographics
How can Obama reach Islam's most crucial demographic - the young and passionate?
Muslim youth are not one homogeneous entity but comprise a remarkable diversity.
From the Saudi teenagers who listen to Britney Spears to those who are swayed by the farewell messages of female suicide bombers; the Egyptian metalheads who spend Friday afternoons at the mosque and Friday evenings playing Black Metal; and the graduate students in Islamabad whose Talibanesque appearance is belied by their study of Hebrew and the latest theories of comparative religion.
While it is heartening to hear Obama tell young people around the world "You matter to us. Your future is our future. And our moment is now," it is not at all clear that his presidency would seize that moment to implement a mutual drive across the Muslim world.
In the US today merely to advocate talking with our adversaries is considered radical. But the students, activists, religious figures and artists who are struggling against the robust authoritarianism that dominates the Muslim world want action.
What Obama must do
The senator from Illinois must stop offering political, economic and military support to repressive governments who torture political prisoners, discourage economic and political reform, and censor Facebook, YouTube and other key nodes of the emerging Muslim public and cultural spheres.
He must push to get US forces out of Iraq, now. And, perhaps more importantly, Obama must hold all the countries of the Middle East - including Israel - to one standard.
Would a President Obama satisfy any of these demands? Not likely. Obama locates the root of the region's woes solely inside it, "emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam".
He is unwilling to even question the role and impact of US Middle East policy in analysing the region's problems.
He will not offer even mild criticism of Israel while wholeheartedly endorsing Tel Aviv's refusal to consider granting Palestinian sovereignty over any part of East Jerusalem,  which forecloses any possibility for peace.
It becomes difficult to see how such views would enable the kind of "aggressive diplomatic effort" across the region the senator calls for.
Talking to Iran
Will Obama sit for talks with the Iranian leadership if he becomes president? [EPA]
Moreover, Obama's much debated willingness to talk to Iran is undercut by his support for implementing confrontational policies.
For example, he supported designating the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation and pushing for increased sanctions against the Islamic Republic -before even sitting down with its leadership.
Most importantly, Obama hedges his pledge to remove US forces from Iraq, refusing to commit to a full withdrawal of US troops while calling for a large expansion of the ranks of the active duty military.
This suggests that as president, Obama would continue and even increase US military engagements in the region, against the wishes of the vast majority of its inhabitants.
Luckily, a burgeoning coalition of people across the Middle East - in particular, the younger generation - are not waiting for "President" Obama, or anyone else, to save them.
American activist youths
A growing activist community, religious and secular together, is challenging the sclerotic politics of their governments and the resistance identities of Islamist extremism - in cyberspace, in the emerging media sphere, and when possible on the streets - with a positive, peace, justice and development oriented Islam.
But this is not the "moderate" Islam preferred by American policy-makers. Rather, it is based on a radical critique of the status quo - of US global economic and military supremacy as much as of the self-inflicted problems of their societies.
If an Obama administration is unwilling or unable to break free of the geopolitical and economic priorities that have long determined US Middle East policy, it will be up to the young Americans who helped elect him to join their counterparts across the Muslim world in demanding that their leaders finally walk the talk of peace, democracy and equitable development.
If they do, an Obama White House could preside over the birth of a new and more positive relationship between the US and the Muslim world.
The views expressed by the author are not necessarily those of Al Jazeera.

It happened in 1608. A small unknown land next to the river BuriGanga was converted into a garrisson town, by Mughal Subedaar Islam Khan. And named after Emperor Jahangir. A fort was built (Lalbagh) to fend off the Marathi and Mogh thugs. With time, the unknown garrison town became  todays mega city Dhaka. Inhabited by 120 million people, the city bears the pride to be the capitol of Independant Bangladesh.

This year Dhaka will be celebriting is 400th Birthday. Happy Birthday to the beloved city of millions, the bearer of many historic events.

Please share your own/collected info/momories about Dhaka to wish her the best in the future on this auspicious occation.

[vinnomot] The World̢۪s Top 20 Public Intellectuals

---------- Forwarded Message ----------

Out of top 20,12 are muslims. Mosy amazing is that first 10 are muslims.

Whatever way you interpret the poll, it is significant for muslim world.

Rankings are an inherently dangerous business. Whether offering a hierarchy of countries, cities, or colleges, any such listâ€"at least any such list worth compilingâ€"is likely to generate a fair amount of debate. In the last issue, when we asked readers to vote for their picks of the world’s top public intellectuals, we imagined many people would want to make their opinions known. But no one expected the avalanche of voters who came forward. During nearly four weeks of voting, more than 500,000 people came to ForeignPolicy.com to cast ballots.

Such an outpouring reveals something unique about the power of the men and women we chose to rank. They were included on our initial list of 100 in large part because of the influence of their ideas. But part of being a â€Å“public intellectualâ€ is also having a talent for communicating with a wide and diverse public. This skill is certainly an asset for some who find themselves in the list’s top ranks. For example, a number of intellectualsâ€"including Aitzaz Ahsan, Noam Chomsky, Michael Ignatieff, and Amr Khaledâ€"mounted voting drives by promoting the list on their Web sites. Others issued press releases or gave interviews to local newspapers. Press coverage profiling these intellectuals appeared around the world, with stories running in Canada, India, Indonesia, Qatar, Spain, and elsewhere.

No one spread the word as effectively as the man who tops the list. In early May, the Top 100 list was mentioned on the front page of Zaman, a Turkish daily newspaper closely aligned with Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen. Within hours, votes in his favor began to pour in. His supportersâ€"typically educated, upwardly mobile Muslimsâ€"were eager to cast ballots not only for their champion but for other Muslims in the Top 100. Thanks to this groundswell, the top 10 public intellectuals in this year’s reader poll are all Muslim. The ideas for which they are known, particularly concerning Islam, differ significantly. It’s clear that, in this case, identity politics carried the day.

[vinnomot] FW: An email from Barack Obama

---------- Forwarded Message ----------

DSCC - Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee
Dear MOHIUDDIN,

Barack Obama said it best in his message yesterday: A new Democratic president alone isn't enough to turn our country around.

This could be the year we elect a gridlock-proof Senate majority that can overcome Republican obstruction and pass a sweeping Democratic agenda. There are at least 11 races where we could pick up seats.

That's why you need to help the DSCC meet its $2.25 million fundraising goal before the critical end-of-quarter FEC deadline. The combined strength of thousands of contributions today - including yours - can help us make the early investments necessary for victory in November.

Click here to make an immediate, secure contribution of $5 or more. Act before June 30 and a group of Democratic Senators will match your gift 2-to-1, instantly TRIPLING your impact.

Thank you for your continued support. I've attached Senator Obama's message in case you missed it.

Harry Reid

BIG CHANGES NEED BIG MAJORITIES - Donate by June 30 and your gift will be TRIPLED.
Dear MOHIUDDIN,

No matter where I've gone in this country, I've met working Americans who feel like the American dream is slipping out of reach. They're working harder for less. The cost of everything from a tank of gas to a bag of groceries, from health care to college tuition, is going up and up. It's getting harder to save and harder to retire. And that's why so many Americans are counting on us to win in November and bring about the change they so desperately need.

The stakes could not be higher. And the choice could not be clearer: at this defining moment in American history, we can continue the failed Bush economic policies that are stretching wallets and straining families and the failed Bush foreign policies that haven't made us safer. Or we can seize this moment by turning the page on the policies of the past, and offering a new direction for the country we love.

Over the course of this historic campaign, almost 40 million people have made their intention clear. They want a new direction - and they want a Democratic president to make it happen.

But a new President alone isn't enough.

I've served long enough in the U.S. Senate to know that Washington must change, and I also know that big changes don't happen without big Senate majorities - and right now, Democrats occupy only 49 seats.

This November, we have a chance to create a Democratic Senate majority like we haven't seen in decades - but it won't happen on its own. For eighteen months, Sen. Hillary Clinton and I counted on people like you to support our campaigns for president - and now I am asking you to do the same for a tremendous slate of Democratic Senate candidates by supporting the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

I know you may have never given to the DSCC before, but even a $5 contribution is enough to make a difference when it adds to our growing strength.

The DSCC delivered historic victories in the 2006 midterm elections, and they will do so again this year if a massive wave of committed Democrats get behind them before this critical second quarter fundraising deadline.

Click here to make a contribution of $5 or more to help expand the Democratic Senate majority in 2008. This quarterly fundraising deadline is so important that everything you give before June 30 will be matched two-to-one by a group of Democratic senators, effectively tripling your contribution.

For the past few months, the pundits and the cynics have been focused on what divides us. But now it is time for Democrats to unite around the causes we share.

It's time to build an economy that rewards not just wealth but work and the workers who create it, and provide affordable, quality health care for all who want it.

It's time to free ourselves from the tyranny of oil so we can get gas prices under control, stop funding both sides in the war on terror, and save this planet for our children.

And it's time to bring our troops home from a war in Iraq that should have never been authorized and never been waged, and bring the hammer down on the terrorists who still remain at large in Afghanistan.

These are the causes we stand for. These are the causes our Democratic Senate candidates stand for.

Tens of thousands of $5 and $20 contributions from Democrats like you give the DSCC everything they need to win in November. The DSCC is helping us compete in every Senate race by constantly monitoring what attacks need to be answered, what precincts need to be organized, and where your money can make the most impact.

Take it from someone who just finished one grueling campaign, and is just starting another: elections are won or lost months before they even happen. The DSCC is already hard at work laying the groundwork for victory in battleground states across the country. They need you right now to keep the momentum going.

Click here to make a contribution of $5 or more to help expand the Democratic Senate majority in 2008. This quarterly fundraising deadline is so important that everything you give before June 30 will be matched two-to-one by a group of Democratic senators, effectively tripling your contribution.

This is our time. With your help and the help of thousands of others, we will bring change to America.

The DSCC is doing everything it can to expand our Democratic majority. We must do the same.

Let's get to work.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

Two wars  definitely hurting  American economy. Time has come to rethink the war in Iraq. Is it serving U.S. interest or hurting U.S. interest. Most other nations arenot contributing for this war and are not suffering due to this ongoing wars. Sooner the war ends is better for U.S. economy. We have to find other alternatives of this wars. War Industry will be happy to continue the wars. Senator McCain will be favored by the war lobby , make no doubt about it.

This days USA is the only country in the world who is atively engaged in wars. Situatiopn won't be easy for senator Obama to withdraw our troops from Iraq as promised. There are obstacles he has to overcome if he is elected. If Senator McCain becomes Ptresident he doesnot have to worry about the continuation of the Iraq war he will be more  comfortable to contnue U.S. military presence in Iraq for hundred year.

Now it is upto the voters to decide our destiny. . Let the voters  decide the destriny, neither the war  Industry nor the Supreme court Judges.

We hope for the best for our sons/daughters who could return from harms way safely.

[vinnomot] scholar voted world's No 1 thinker

Please note: forwarded message attached

----- Original Message -----
From: R Ahmed

Islamic scholar voted world's No 1 thinker

·        Robert Tait in Istanbul The Guardian, Monday June 23, 2008

A hitherto largely unknown Turkish Islamic scholar, Fethullah Gülen, has been voted the world's top intellectual in a poll to find the leading 100 thinkers.

Gülen, the author of more than 60 books, won a landslide triumph after the survey - which is organised by the British magazine, Prospect, and Foreign Policy, a US publication - attracted more than 500,000 votes.

The top 10 individuals were all Muslim and included two Nobel laureates, the novelist Orhan Pamuk, who is also Turkish, at No 4, and the Iranian human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi, in 10th.

The result surprised organisers, who attributed it to a sustained campaign by Gülen's followers, known as the Gülen Movement, after Turkey's biggest-selling newspaper, Zaman, publicised the poll.

Prospect's editor, David Goohart, admitted to not having previously heard of Gülen and said his supporters had "made a mockery" of the poll. But he said the result flagged up significant political trends in Turkey.

"The victory of Gülen draws attention to the most important conflict in Europe, played out in Turkey between the secular nationalist establishment and the reforming Islamic democrats of the AK [Justice and Development] party," he said.

The AKP, which is allied to Gülen, is contesting a case brought by Turkey's chief prosecutor to shut it down and ban it from politics for allegedly trying to usher in Islamic rule, in breach of the country's secular constitution.

A Gülen supporter, Bulent Kenes, who is editor-in-chief of Today's Zaman newspaper, denied the poll had been hijacked. "There are many people who promote Gülen's ideas, which contribute to world peace by urging international dialogue and tolerance."

Gülen, 67, is known for a modernist brand of Islam. He was cleared of trying to topple the state in 2006 after being charged over footage in which he apparently urged civil service supporters to await his orders to overthrow the system. He said the film had been doctored.

Gülen, who has lived in the US since 1998, is credited with establishing a global network of schools which preach Islam in a spirit of tolerance. He has been praised in the west for promoting dialogue and condemned Osama bin Laden as a monster after September 11.

Yunus voted 2nd among world's top thought leaders

Staff Correspondent   Daily Star  24/6/08

Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus was voted second in the top 100 intellectuals of the world in a global poll hot on the heels of the University of Cambridge selecting him in its list of top 50 global thought leaders.

Yunus, chairman of Grameen Bank, came second to a little-known Turkish Islamic scholar, Fethullah Gulen, who won the survey organised jointly by Prospect, a British magazine and Foreign Policy, a US publication, reports British newspaper the Guardian.

The survey attracted 500,000 votes.

The top ten of the list were all Muslim and included two Nobel laureates, Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk and Iranian human rights activist Shirin Ebadi.

Indian noble laureate Amartya Sen came 16th in the poll while writer Salman Rushdie was voted 23rd.

Yunus was recently chosen by Cambridge University as one of the top 50 thought leaders on corporate sustainability and sustainability, as part of the university's 800th anniversary and 20th anniversary of the Cambridge Programme for Industry (CPI).

He was chosen through a selection process after a poll conducted among CPI's 2000-strong alumni network.
