[vinnomot] Electoral Codes in Bangladesh: Boston Mayor Loses his job

As per Bangladesh Electoral Codes and Regulations, if any candidate in the local elections identify themselves as a 'member of a national political party' or as a candidate of a national political party, he/she would be disqualified in the upcoming election.  If he/she gets elected and found guilty of violating such 'non-democratic' electoral code of conduct, his/her victory will be declared as 'null and void' by the Election Commission.  Is such is desined either (1) to discourage politicians or political party to participate in the local elections, or (2) to tell lies or hide one's true identity? Is it designed to weaken political parties and create a nation of liars?  See the Bangladesh leading daily the New Age's report below.  If such electoral code of conduct would have been in practice in the U. S., elections of all our Mayors like Mayor Nennino would have been nullified as they identify themselves as members of a national political parties.   What a wonder!!!

__________

As per the Bangladesh Caretaker government's "electoral code of conduct and electoral regulations", any candidate for local elections, for example. Mayoral Election cannot declare himself or herself as a member of any political party.  If he does and if his/her activists organize campaigns or raise funds, such will be deemed as 'violation of the electoral code of conduct and electoral rules'.  He/she can be disqualified to contest and if elected, his/her victory can be declared as null and void.  Under such a situation, can you expect a 'free, fair and credible election'?

See newspaper report on Mayoral election below.

ALLEGED VIOLATION OF CODE OF CONDUCT
EC starts probe against
12 candidates
Staff Correspondent , The Ndw Age, July 24, 2008

The Election Commission has started investigation of alleged violation of electoral code of conduct and electoral rules by 12 candidates in the August 4 elections to four city corporations.
The EC on Tuesday decided to launch the investigation and asked the returning officers concerned to submit reports to the commission within a week. The EC has assigned an official to receive such allegations against candidates and submit them to the commission at its meeting every four days.
'If the candidates are found guilty after investigation, their nomination papers may be cancelled', according to the commission's rules and code of conduct.
Of the 12 allegations already made, six were lodged from Sylhet city corporation area, two from Barisal, one from Khulna and three from Rajshahi city corporation area.
The returning officers also started issuing warning to the candidates against violating electoral code of conduct.
The RO for Rajshahi city corporation polls has already issued such warnings to two mayoral candidates and a councillor candidate for violating the code of conduct.
Mayoral candidates AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, a Nagarik Committee nominee and Raihanur Rahman, a Progressive Democratic Party leader, have been cautioned against using their respective party identities during campaigns.
New Age staff correspondent in Sylhet reported that an eight-member vigilance team headed by a deputy election commissioner has been formed in Sylhet to oversee the electioneering by the mayoral and councillor candidates in the Sylhet city corporation polls set for August 4.
The team has been formed to take legal action against the candidates and their supporters if they are found to have violated the code of conduct, sources in the office of the returning officer said.
'Even cases may be filed with the police if evidence of violation of conduct is found against a candidate', Mizanur Rahman Khandaker, deputy election commissioner and returning officer for the SCC polls, said.
Other members of the vigilance team are – the district election officer, Sylhet metropolitan police commissioner, deputy director of the Ansars and VDP, deputy director of the district information office, deputy director of the secondary education department and secretary of the Sylhet city corporation.
According to sources in the returning office, written complaints against six candidates – four for general councillor's seats and two for reserved seats in the SCC – have so far been submitted to the returning officer for violation of the code of conduct.
A case was filed with the Kotwali police against six supporters of Babrul Hossain Babul, a mayoral candidate, on Tuesday.
The police arrested them as they brought out a truck procession with a brass band, prohibited by the electoral rules, in Shibganj area in the city, the sources said. The arrested were sent to jail, Kotwali police said.
'Notice will be served to contestants for councillor posts if they are found violating the code of conduct', the returning officer said

RE: [vinnomot] While atheism is fastest growing in the West, it is declining in South Asia

Yes, U have missed, probably the most vital one. South Asian people are introvert/ coward by nature. They were never been conqueror always been conquered. Can’t accept new thing/ ideas.

Subject: [vinnomot] While atheism is fastest growing in the West, it is declining in South Asia

While majority of Europe is conclusively turning into atheism, and in USA, atheists are increasing in number ( 8 to 12% from 1986 to 2005), in South Asia we are still in  the grip of religious illusion of Islam and Hinduism.

Here is the tally of atheists population.

 Sweden 86%

 Japan 56%

 France 54%

 UK 44%

In USA, it is at 12% now from 8% in 1987

Question is why in South Asia we are falling back while West is moving forward?

Couple of hypothesis we need to analyze-

 (1) Poverty-lack of education

 (2) Stronger heritage of spiritualism

 (3) State patronage

 (4) Stronger existence of family structure

 (5) Fall of communism as savior of oppressed class

 (6) Conservative  response to women liberation movement in the West--fear of losing battle over women womb.

(7) Cultural heritage is religious heritage---because of mass illiteracy, secular literature /culture is still alien to the poor South Asians.

(8) Media patronage of religion.

 Did I miss any?

[vinnomot] Expulsion of Indian speaker from a Stalinist Party: Karat proved his insanity again

Expulsion of Indian speaker from a Stalinist Party: Karat proved his insanity again
Biplab Pal  22/7/2008

Finally, the most obvious and unavoidable happened. Speaker of Indian Parliament Mr Somnath Chatterjee has been expelled
for following Indian constitution and denying  CPM party constitution that demands near fanatic surrender of individual existence to
party supremo Prakash Karat. Such is the veracity of surrender, it will shame even monotheist faiths that demand total surrender of human being to God.

Let rewind the rolls.  Chatterjee is more veteran and seasoned CPM politicians than Karat, He also happened to be spokesperson for CPM
in Indian parliament for four consecutive times. In his forty years of political career no scandal has touched him as he followed and carried himself
with dignity and a persona admired by his friends and foes alike. From the very beginning of no confidence motion, he made it very clear  that he has been elected as speaker by MPs of all the parties and by Indian Constitution, a speaker must carry himself above the party line maintaining the dignity and sanctity of Indian constitution. If Mr Chatterjee would have toed with Prakash Karat's party line of destroying India for his own identity crisis, he would have insulted Indian constitution that demands a perfect and pure neutrality from the Speaker.
For last three months, I have been very clear about one thing-Mr Karat knows very well this US-India nuclear deal can not be opposed on merits of
material usefulness. He extended the opportunity of opposition to increase his presence in Indian politics and to strengthen his position in CPM. Basic principle of managerial psychology demands that a managers asserts and improves his authority by imposing unpopular decision among his subordinates.
Prevailing against the will of followers is the true test of authority. CPM leaders in general from WB, were not opposed to more civilian nuclear power. But except for Subash Chakrabarty, not a single dissident could
open their mind out fearing reprisal and expulsion from notorious Stalinist Karat gang in Delhi politburo. Stalinist principle of diluting dissidents is not possible in democracy and therefore, Karat made biggest mistake of his life time by expelling the most popular speaker from his party.

Now with the loss in Parliament, CPM stands no where in Indian political map. No media will be asking his face any more because he made himself unwanted both by Congress and BJP. He lost his influence on Indian politics completely. Partying with Mayabati, who campaigned with Modi even after Gujrat riot, is a ludicrous political engineering by so called 'anti-communalist' Karat. CBI will unleash its investigation on Nandigram which was held back by center to avoid rift inside UPA. Young generation of Indians  are now extremely disappointed to see face of leftist force which is nothing but a farcical existence to please a Stalinist supremo called Karat.

Let me be very clear. We, the young Indians want power and not politics. Talking about American imperialism will not deter us to be convinced
otherwise, because we don't chase ghosts but milk the cow called America. Our inspiration of better India is based on new opportunity to set
up new business following American model of entrepreneurship. We may not support American foreign policy but we want more
business relation with America to be rich and affluent. That is young India. Mr Karat, you recognize it or perish from Indian political landscape

[vinnomot] This CTG has proved 2: Khaleda or Hasina need to be back

Bangladesh can be compared with a overcrowded bus which is on the way of an unknown road.

To run this bus , we need experienced driver. The chance of disaster  at the hand of inexperienced driver is very high.

The inexperineced driver of  this CTG has proved this   by creating mess everywhere .

These inexperienced drivers have frustrated their supporters more, frustrated the nation overall  and created confusion  and uncertainty  in every aspect of national  life.

No body can predict where the country is heeding and not even the drivers. If future leaders   after the election are  also inexperienced like the drivers of the CTG, Then situation will not  improve any more. Rather will be far more worse

So  Khaleda or hasina must be back for the bettermant of the country.

Another point, that this CTG has made clear  by their two years  conspiracy of producing leaders that There is no national leader but Hasina and khaleda.

But a nation  can not run  by regional or single sit leader, without national  leader. So Hasina or Khaleda must be back for national interest.

 Because   নাই মামার চেয়ে কানা মামা ভাল ।

"দুষ্ট গরুর চেয়ে শূণ্য গোয়াল ভাল "এটা নেতৃত্বের ক্ষেত্রে চলে না

Hi Mr Mahathir

It now seems mostly to all people of Bangladesh that CTG is formed by the street fighters of so called political leaders for looting public money when in power or not in power for the politicians by the politicians & of the politicians sharing with CTG.

Is it not correct??????

Once a migrant worker, today he's a brain surgeon

Dr. Alfredo Quinones' hands used to pick produce; now they remove tumors

  Surgeon beats the odds
July 23: In TODAY's "American Story," Bob Dotson tells the story of  a former migrant worker who overcame many obstacles to become one of the finest brain surgeons in the world.

"Dr. Q" has a theory about how to cure cancer that he can't wait to tell me.

I look around at his lab assistants, their faces a rainbow of colors — intense, smart, listening. Their parents come from many parts of the world. Dr. Q has chosen them to test his theory: that a team of scientists from a diversity of backgrounds might find a cure for cancer more quickly, because each would see the problem differently.

The lab at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore we're all gathered in belongs to Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa — "Dr. Q." He is one of the best brain surgeons in the world, but two decades ago, his hands were picking vegetables for $22 a day. Quinones was a migrant worker, living under an old camper top in the middle of a California field.

"Sometimes I would cry myself to sleep thinking, 'What am I doing here?' " Quinones recalls. "I have a cousin who told me, 'You're never going to be anything but a migrant worker the rest of your life.' But it just ignited this fire in my belly."

He learned dozens of jobs, with a blazing desire to be the best at whatever life offered. It was Dr. Joe Martinez Jr. who steered him toward medicine. "Alfredo came to work in my lab his senior year at the University of California at Berkley," Martinez recalls. "He knew nothing about the brain, but learned at an amazing rate. He was one of the two best students I ever taught."

Quinones studied math and science because he didn't have to write perfect English to do well at them. Martinez told him that with his grades, he should try for one of the very best medical schools in the country. He made it to Harvard and graduated at the top of his class.

"I think what drives Alfredo is fear," Martinez says. "Fear of failure."

"It's OK to be afraid," Quinones says. "Because you know what happens when you're afraid? You work like crazy. One thing that this country absolutely, absolutely values is hard work." And that's what he tells kids who wonder whether they can beat overwhelming odds too.

Now Dr. Q breezes into a patient's room. "Aww-right! Here's my team!" he shouts. His medical students gather around the bed. Quinones teaches them to treat all patients as friends, reminding them: "Don't forget the human side."

And Quinones tries to remember that himself. Like his patients, he has had more than his share of uncertainty and tears in his life. Many nights his mother had no food for the table because his father lost the family's gas station in Mexico. "He used to tell me, 'If you wanna be like me for the rest of your life, don't go to school,' " Quinones says.

Heeding his father's warning, Quinones graduated college at 18. He became a teacher, but found that, like his father, he was not earning enough.

So, on his 19th birthday, he clawed to the top of a 16-foot fence and jumped — illegally — to an uncertain future here in the U.S. "All I wanted to do was come in, make a little bit of money, send it back to my parents," he says.

I ask Quinones how he feels about illegal immigration today. Should we build walls? Should we keep illegal immigrants out of our schools?

"Can we build walls?" he asks rhetorically. "Sure, we're gonna build walls. Can we make 'em taller? Sure, we can make 'em taller. Would that be a solution? As long as there's poverty, and as long as people are dying of hunger in other places, it's human nature. They will try to find better ways."

Ironically, the brain surgeon followed his heart, not his brain: He became a U.S. citizen rather than return to Mexico a hero. He felt he owed this country for all the opportunity it had given him.

So now, each evening, as other doctors head home, Quinones goes to his lab, looking for clues in the brain tumors he's taken out.

"What if you never find the cure for brain cancer?" I ask.

"It doesn't matter whether you're successful or not," answers Quinones. "What matters is that you give the world the best, and the best will come back to you."
