Commentary : Obama picked Joe Biden, a feisty senator

The American voters should fasten their seatbelt because the election season is surely be filled with turbulence.

SAN-Feature Service : Senator Obama, the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party, finally announced his decision about the picking of the Vice presidential candidate in the wee hours of Saturday, August 23, 2008. The announcement came hardly two days before the commencement of Democratic convention to be held in Denver , Colorado .  First, the news of the selection of Senator Joseph Biden, the 65-year old lawmaker from Delaware , was e-mailed to millions of Obama supporters and contributors (I was one of the lucky recipients!).  Then the news was sent via text message to millions of Obama supporters.  CNN's correspondent Mr. King was the first newsman to report about the VP selection.  By daybreak, all the news networks were humming with the news of Senator Biden's selection as the VP candidate.  By lunchtime, political pundits were having a field day in the airwaves who gave their "expert" opinion about how the inclusion of Joe Biden in the ticket is going to make a difference in the outcome of November 4 election for the White House.

Senator Joseph Biden who is popularly known amongst his friend as "Joe Biden" is known both for his short fuse and usual loquaciousness.  An artful speaker, Joe Biden, has a propensity for making verbose speech.  His friends in the Senate wished he would speak less because some of the words emanating from Biden's mouth have haunted the senator in the past.  For example, on January 1, 2007 when Senator Biden announced that he will be competing in the primaries he gave an interview to NY Observer when he described Senator Obama as follows: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man."  This characterization of Obama was later labeled as racist remarks and Senator Biden later apologized publicly for his off-the-cuff remark.

Not too long ago in early 2008, Senator Biden Senator Biden held a very negative opinion about Senator Obama when he said, "The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training." However, in politics there is no final word.  Senator Biden had gladly accepted the offer Senator Obama made on Thursdays (August 21, 2008).  Many Biden observers in Washington were surprised how the senator from Delaware kept the news so secret.

The presumptive nominee for vice president, Senator Biden, was flown to Springfield , the capital of Illinois located in the farmland of central Illinois for the official announcement by Senator Obama.  And Joe Biden spent no time to criticize Senator McCain when he said John McCain would have to, "figure out which of the kitchen tables to sit at" when considering his own economic future.  There is an allusion to McCain's remark just the other day when Politico's reporter asked him how many homes he has.  The presumptive Republican nominee replied by saying that his staff will give the answer later because he is not quite sure how many homes he owns.  By some reliable account McCain and his wife own 7 homes in different states of America .

In American politics the candidate for vice president is considered to be an attack dog.  While the presidential candidate maintains the decorum of the highest office, the VP candidate may do scathing characterization of the opponents.  In 1976 presidential election, Senator Bob Dole, who ran as the VP along with President Gerald Ford, had blithely assumed the role of attack dog to say negative things about President Jimmy Carter.  The same goes for George H.W. Bush (1980), Dan Quayle (1988), John Edwards (2004).

Many political observers in America rightfully think that after the Labor Day when the presidential election will gather steam, this election season is going to turn very ugly indeed.  The Republican Party will try to repeat the onslaughts of negative campaigns by characterizing Obama as a naïve and celebrity-like figure who is not ready yet to become the commander-in-chief and who is not a patriot, etc., and the Obama campaign unlike Senator Kerry will be ready this time to launch its own brand of negative campaign.  To this effort, Senator Joe Biden will be a tremendous asset who is known Washington to possess an acerbic tongue.  Some Democratic insiders however think that Senator Biden is a loose canon who needs to be watched closely so that the campaign for White House runs smoothly.

One thing very positive about Senator Biden is that he would bring a wealth of experiences in foreign policy because he is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the fourth-longest serving Democratic senator.  Both Senator McCain and Senator Hillary Clinton had negative things to say about Obama's lack of exposure to foreign policy.  By including Senator Biden – a deft hand at foreign policy matters Obama had extricated himself from this allegation.  The Democratic ticket became a strong one by the inclusion of Senator Biden.

Senator Biden comes from a Blue Color background who grew up in Scranton , Pennsylvania . Unlike McCain who is quite rich having assets more than 100 millions, Joe Biden is an average American whose assets are in the range of $150,000 to $300,000 with a liability of the same amount. Senator Biden had to take up loans to finance his son's college education.  The senator is well-liked by his colleagues in the senate.  Not long ago, Biden considered McCain as his personal friend.  However, on the day he was introduced as the running mate of Obama, Joe Biden shot the first shot without any hesitation.

The American voters should fasten their seatbelt because the election season is surely be filled with turbulence.  It is going to be a nasty fight and one should expect our no-nonsense senator from Delaware to be very feisty and scrappy.  McCain campaign will have now this added job of containing Senator Biden who could easily fill the airwaves with his usual verbosity. –SAN-Feature Service
