Dear All:

Maryland Governor Hon. Martin O'Malley hosted a reception at his official residence "Governor's Mansion" to celebrate the month of Ramadan on last Monday, September 2008. The presences of the Lt. Governor Hon. Anthony Brown and First Lady Hon. Katie O'Malley have enlightened the reception to the State's highest level. Under the leaderships of Gov. Martin O'Malley and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Maryland is the only state in the USA which celebrated Ramadan month officially at the Governor's Mansion. Muslims of the state Maryland are proud of it.

Law maker of the Maryland's General Assembly Del. Hon. Saqib Ali, Muslim Commissioners of the Governor's several Commissions, especially, Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs and Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs, leaders of the several state and county Muslim Councils and community organizations were present at the reception. As a Commissioner of the Governor's Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs and Muslim by faiths I and my wife were invited and we were honored to attend the reception.

The reception started with a "Dua" led by an Imam with Hon. Governor and Lt. Governor by his side. A Maghrib prayer was held at the reception hall of the Governor's mansion followed by Dua and Iftar. Having a Maghrib prayer at the Governor's mansion was an historical event for the Muslims of the State of Maryland.

Anthony Brown gave short speeches after a feast highlighting the importance of Islam and its' culture to the enrichment of the cultural diversities and religions of the state of Maryland. Both top executives of the State praised Muslim citizens for their contributions to the development of the State of Maryland in all areas. Hon. Saqib Ali, the only Muslim legislator thanked Governor for honoring the Muslims and for hosting a reception at his residence to celebrate Month of Ramadan for second times during his term.

Mr. Anwar Hossain, Chairman, Governor's Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs spoke on behalf of the Muslims of Maryland and thanked Governor and the First Lady to host the reception and to allow guests to say their prayers at their official reception hall. Later he presented a book on the life of Hazrat Muhammad (SM) to the governor and Carpets with art of Muslim cultures to the First Lady and to the Lt. Governor. Montgomery County Muslim Council president Mrs. Irma Hafiz also gave gifts to the Governor and to the First Lady.

    1. I am Jewish, but I am raising my nephew to be muslim as his deceased father was. It was good showing him these pictures and showing him where my brother came from and what traditions are like outside the United States. Even though he was a step brother, aways will think of him as my brother and honor him so. Thats why I am raising his child as such.

    1. You don't have to be muslim to appreciate these pictures as truely beautiful pictures of people expressing their faith. I am truely grateful to see something other than the overall negative view of the faith we recieve in the US.

  • 1. I am not a Muslim, but I had the privilege of attending an Interfaith Service at the International Day of Peace at a local Muslim Mosque and breaking the fast after sunset on September 21. It was a most beautiful, spiritual experience hearing the call to prayer with many different kinds of prayers for peace - Muslim, Jewish, Unitarian Universalists, Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, and many more faith traditions. Afterward, we all participated in breaking the fast after Ramadan - even though many of us didn't observe Ramadan - and had a find Middle-Eastern meal. It was a beautiful service and I felt cleansed spiritually and felt the love all people of all religions.
The pictures are beautiful and remind me of this beautiful experience.

Re: [vinnomot] "Topple the government & restore the Khilafat" - 11 Hijbut Tahrir activists arrested in Rajshahi

Mr. Mushfique may have jumped into a hasty conclusion. Hizb ut Tahrir is an Internationalist
radical Islamic organization: The party is banned in Saudi Arabia and Egypt but alive but
    kicking in UK  and Bangladesh.

The Reuters news on the recent arrest described Hijabut Taher as a banned party
Recent attempt by one of our fellow blogger to soft-sale neo-Khilafat doctrine as
"Re-establishing the Khalifah but not literally" is nothing but devoid of reality.
The doctrine "Topple the government & restore the Khilafat" is an example of what
the Hizb ut Tahrir really  want !

The party Hizb ut Tahrir [name means "party of liberation".] Bangladesh is staunchly anti-American and very much against Saudi Monarchy, Sheikhdoms and other pro-western Moslim governments,  which it wants to overthrow.  In November 2007,  when an American warship arrived in Bangladesh to help deliver food and dissaster relief,  the Hizb ut-Tahrir,  protested the American military presence in our
    soil.

Hizb ut Tahrir is a cell-based, cadre-operated, radical Islamist political organization that
operates in 40 countries around the world, with headquarters apparently in London.
Its proclaimed goal is to end American & western hegemony and the overthrow of
existing political regimes in the muslim countries and their  replacement with a centralized
    Islamic Caliphate.....

Some western analysts describe the group as "soft jihadists." Others contend that it veers
beyond that. "The only difference between Islamists from Hizb ut-Tahrir and jihadists is that
the former are waiting for their state and caliph before they commence jihad, while the latter
believes the time for jihad is now,"  said Ed Husain, a former member of Hizb ut-Tahrir who
has written against the group in a recent book, "The Islamist."

With the above back-drop, US/Saudi role behind  the order to arrest Hizb ut Tahrir cadres in
Bangladesh can not be ruled out.Especially, when one of the masterminds of  Bangladesh's
military backed CTG, Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman is currently in Washington and trying to
impress the US State Department about some long term plansof our ruling clique,

It is difficult to belive that "such order to arrest them might have decended from
Daily Prothom-Alo / Daily Star" which would essentially mean that
Prothom-Alo / Daily Star is running the government and the Home advisor
Major General (Retd) Mohammad Abdul Matin, Bir Protik, psc is powerless .....

This party was in a propaganda against 'prothom alo' for its anti bangladesh and anti islam role.
the daily star report brought many alligations against  the party but with out any document.

Though I am not quite a fan of this organization or its ideology, yet since they are not an outlawed party, the POLICE shouldnot have arrested them for arranging a press conference. Perhaps, such order to arrest them might have decended from Daily Prothom-Alo / Daily Star. Because P-Alo sure do have some unresovled issues with Hizboot Tahri.

3 varsity teachers among 11 militants held

Twelve Hijbut Tahrir activists, three of whom are
university teachers, have been arrested in front of Rajshahi
City press club on the eve of holding a press conference
    yesterday. Focus Bangla
    Staff Reporter

Police arrested 11 Hijbut Tahrir activists at Sonadighi crossing in the Rajshahi northwestern city yesterday on the eve of their pre-announced press conference.

Among the arrested ones there are three university teachers. The three arrested teachers are Prof. Dr Syed Golam Mawla of Management Department and Prof. Ahmed Jamal of Chemistry Department of Dhaka University and Mamun Ansari of the private Southern University in Dhaka.

Police said they arrested the Tahrir men as "suspected militants" after they reached Rajshahi by a microbus to hold the press conference at the local Press Club at 1pm for announcing programme of the party.

They were detained around 12:30pm on Thursday at Rajshahi Press Club.

The others held are believed to be students of different universities in the country. They are Masud Kawser, son of Shafiqul Islam of Chandpur district, Omar Farook, son of Sadiqul Islam of Chapainawabganj, Moniruzzaman Masud, son of Harunur Rashid of Noakhali, Saddam Hossain, son of Mohammad Hossain, and Mozammel Haque, son of Shamsul Islam, of Brahmanbaria, Akhtar Hossain, son of Ali Hossain of Chittagong, Jahedul Islam, son of Aftab Uddin of Kishoreganj, and their microbus driver Jahangir Alam, son of Abdur Rahman of Noakhali district.

Police also seized the microbus carrying them, 12 mobile-phone sets and huge leaflets and posters of the party from the possession of the Tahrir activists.

This group's abortive debut here came as a major matter after the JMB militants' march through this city at the height of their vigilance operation in the district and their eventual nemesis.

Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Detective Branch Ekramul

Hossain said the university teachers and others were arrested as "suspected militants" in apprehension of their "subversive acts".

Carrying leaflets with anti-government statements in violation of the state of emergency was also cited as a ground for taking them in.

Arrested DU teacher Golam Mawla said they convened a press conference

at Rajshahi City Press Club a day before the party's central press conference at the Engineers' Institute Auditorium in Dhaka.

The DU teacher also named Mohiuddin Ahmed as their party's central leader.

Prior to arranging the press conference, the party activists distributed leaflets in the city-heart Saheb Bazaar area after Tarabi prayers on Sept 9. The party leaflets also carried anti-government slogans.

The party undertook steps to spread and propagate its activities by holding the press conference in Rajshahi for the first time, sources said. But police forestalled the move.

In the leaflets the group also urged the Muslim Ummah to unite during the holy month of Ramadan and "regain the lost glory".

They also made a call for what they said "toppling the government for restoration of Khilafat (caliphate)".

Especially, Rajshahi's Bagmara area was a stronghold of Islamic militants under JMJB, the operations wing of JMB, and Sarbahara outlaws in the last few years.

Back then, JMB's second-in-command Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai had launched a cleansing operation in 2004 against the outlaws in a bid to eliminate them. After the deadly drive, the terrorist activities were somehow under control.

Bangla Bhai and JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman and four other leaders were hanged in two judges' killing cases of Jhalakati last year.
