New Delhi: The fanatical Hindu mobs have struck in the Capital. And the police has kept it under wraps. A good fortnight ago, a mob attacked a handfu

l of Christian families at the Peeragarhi Relief Camp and demolished the frontal portion of the Christian prayer hall in the camp.

This camp in west Delhi is barely 15 km from Parliament House. To this day, this group of Christians is holding weekly mass with police protection. The families say they are living in constant fear of local miscreants allegedly owing allegiance to ''some religious organisations" who accuse them of carrying out "forced conversions" and threaten to "take away" their daughters unless they "mended their ways."

The mob had struck on September 16. Despite repeated attempts, the community has not managed to get a FIR registered for what they call "vandalism" and police describe as "regular land dispute".

Ezik Malik, the priest-in-charge of the prayer hall says that a day before the actual demolition, he had got a call from an unidentified caller saying that the roof of the hall had collapsed.

"We promptly went to rebuild it when suddenly this mob of 500 reached the place carrying saffron flags and sticks. They started pelting stones that left six people injured. There were anti-Christian slogans and then they demolished part of the hall. Policemen just looked on. On hindsight I realised that they had damaged the roof to create a situation that could later be used as an excuse for unrest." He added that despite repeated attempts the local police station refused to lodge a FIR but gave the community protection.

Sister Rani, who was praying inside the hall when the incident happened, says she was attacked by some of the men. "It's like a never-ending nightmare. There have been no arrests and we are living in constant fear of more attacks."

The aftershocks of the incident are still being felt with the bi-weekly mass having been replaced by just a once a week prayer. Even then attendance is thin and the threats continue.

Struggling to hold back her tears, a petrified Pyalo Dev said: "They come everyday since that incident and ask us to leave this area as we do not 'belong' here and we should not be practising Christianity in this area. I am scared about my teenaged daughter. All the women from our community who go out to work are followed. It is a nerve-wracking situation and I do not know how much more of this I can take."

DCP (west) Sharad Aggarwal denies any religious angle in the unrest. "It was entirely a land dispute," he claimed. "The Christians were trying to extend the prayer hall beyond the boundary wall which is when locals objected. There was an agitation but everything was under control because we were right there when it happened. There was no demolition and we have given them police protection."

The MCD, which is the sole body that can carry out demolitions, is not aware of any unauthorised construction here. MCD commissioner K S Mehra said he was unaware of the incident. A MCD spokesman, however, said that the police or anyone else is not authorised to carry out demolitions. "We carry them out and ask for police protection," he said.

Bangladeshi fundamentalists has different agenda than the real Al-Qaida. As pro-Islamist BNP is stronger there is no need for any other religious organization. Even Jamat and other rightists stay under the BNP umbrella. Secularist BAL and Islamist BNP is two major political force in Bangladesh,there is no third force there. All other political parties and groups should remain under this two major parties for their own interest. So called Al-Qaida of Banglaesh is already paralysed by stromng action from past government of BNP. Entire leadership has been eliminated or hanged by the BNNP government. There is no need to worry about the Al Qaida juju anymore in Bangladesh. Rather Al-Qaida is more active in India and Pakistan than Bangladesh.

Saying 'no' to 'grand
alliance' not enough

SOME leaders of the left-leaning 11-party alliance insist that they will not enter into the 'grand alliance' cobbled together by the Awami League although they will continue to be part of the AL-led 14-party alliance, so says a report front-paged in the Bangla daily Prothom Alo. The left leaders attribute their stance to the inclusion of the Jatiya Party led by the 'deposed despot' HM Ershad and the religion-based Islami Oikya Jote in the alliance, saying sharing the same dais with the communal forces and an autocrat merely for vote-bank politics will be detrimental to both elections and politics. While the position taken by the left leaders against mere vote-bank politics and the 'grand alliance' is commendable, their decision to stay within the 14-party fold appears no less opportunistic. Let us explain why.

   The people of this country fought the war of independence in 1971 with a view to securing for themselves a sovereign nation state built on secular-democratic principles; establishing therein representative democracy through sustained opposition to religion-based politics on the one hand and militarisation of politics on the other; and introducing an egalitarian economic order whereby they will be ensured equal access to public resources. Regrettably, the ruling elite or, in other words, its political parties have steadily veered away from the spirit of the war of independence into the clutches of illiberal politics and neoliberal economic policies, led worldwide by the United States and the international financial institutions such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Asian Development Bank.
   While the mainstream political parties such as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the Awami League, the Jatiya Party and the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh somewhat gleefully acquiesced to policies prescribed by the US and the neoliberal international financial institutions, the left-leaning forces have been no less culpable for allowing the slow but sure abdication of the spirit of the war of independence by the ruling elite. They have failed to put up effective resistance to such a practice on the one hand and hobnobbed with the mainstream political parties at different times on the other.
   The rationale the left-leaning parties put forth for choosing one major political camp over the other has been tenuous as well. Indeed, the BNP is no longer the centrist party it professes to be and is surrounded by Islamist and anti-democratic forces. However, the Awami League has also not hesitated to either sign a memorandum of understanding with the Khelafat-e-Majlish, a political party which makes no attempt to veil its aspiration to see Bangladesh transformed into a theocratic state, recently or recognise Jamaat as a democratic force back in the 1990s and take it on board in their movement against the BNP government. It has also welcomed into the 'grand alliance' Ershad, a deposed military dictator who drove the last nail into the coffin of the people's secular-democratic aspiration by making Islam the state religion.
   Hence, the decision by the left leaders to stay in the 14-party alliance but not join the 'grand alliance' may be high on feel-good factors but essentially smacks of the kind of political opportunism that they castigate the mainstream political parties for. If they really want the national politics restored on the secular-democratic ideals, they should dissociate themselves from the opportunistic political parties right-away and rally the secular-democratic forces in society. It might not take them to the corridors of power immediately, but will surely give rise to an alternative and progressive political stream that they themselves envisaged when they formed the 11-party alliance a few years ago. Society needs such a political stream to keep the aspiration for a return to the ideals of the war of independence alive.
