[vinnomot] The 'master plan' to save Pakistan - BBC News

The 'master plan' to save Pakistan

By Syed Shoaib Hasan
BBC News, Islamabad

Benazir Bhutto and Asif Zardari
Asif Zardari lived in Benazir Bhutto's shadow
The victory of Asif Zardari, husband of assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, in Pakistan's presidential election represents an extraordinary turnaround for the most mistrusted politician in the country.
As her husband, Mr Zardari lived in Ms Bhutto's shadow.
He proved to be a weak link in her political armour, repeatedly being charged with corruption and earning the infamous nickname, "Mr 10%".
He spent eight long years in jail while Pervez Musharraf was president. He was released in 2004 as part of political haggling between General Musharraf and Ms Bhutto.
Proven wrong
He was thrust into the centre stage after his wife's assassination in December 2007, when he became the de facto leader of their Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
The future could be guaranteed for the next generation of PPP leadership, if we play it right
PPP insider

Many doubted his ability to lead the country's largest political party. Others simply said it marked the beginning of the end for the PPP.
But thus far Mr Zardari has proven them all wrong.
After the PPP's success in February's elections, Mr Zardari engineered a coalition government that included the PPP's historical rival, the PML-N of former Prime Minster Nawaz Sharif.
Mr Zardari then played a Machiavellian game in which the two men worked to force President Musharraf to resign, rather than risk being impeached.
Nawaz Sharif
Nawaz Sharif could face a long battle with Mr Zardari
Mr Zardari then locked horns with Mr Sharif, refusing to fulfil pledges to restore judges sacked by Mr Musharraf or to reduce the powers of the president.
In fact, Mr Zardari announced that he himself would stand for president, rather than support Mr Sharif's option of supporting a non-partisan person for the post.
As a result, Mr Sharif opted to leave the coalition.
Long-term battle
As long as the remaining parties in the coalition stand firm, Mr Zardari looks certain to win Saturday's election.
However, he could be facing a longer term all-out battle with Mr Sharif, the most popular politician in the country, that many analysts believe could eventually wipe out the PPP.
Asif Zardari
Mr Zardari was nicknamed 'Mr 10%'
However, some Zardari confidantes say he has a grand master plan developed by Benazir.
It starts with a deal with the country's most powerful institution, the army. Mr Zardari's government will protect their interests, taking into account the army's foreign strategic concerns and making sure its share of the national budget is well stocked.
The government will ensure a steady supply of aid and equipment from the US to meet the army's needs to keep up with its giant neighbour, India.
In return, the army will go all out to defeat the militants in Pakistan's tribal areas and keep out of national politics, party insiders say.
The PPP would be able to offer the one thing the United States most wants, all-out war on the Taleban and their al-Qaeda associates using Pakistan's full resources.
For this, the PPP has made it clear to the US and the army that it needs as much power as possible, and that means having PPP people as president and prime minister.
'Future guaranteed'
It also means scrapping any talk of reducing the power of the president. "It would be counter productive to our aims for the future of the party," says a confidante.
Aftermath of attack on army munitions factory, August 2008
Militants have grown more daring over the last two years
So the obvious next question is how the PPP can use all of this to shore up its electoral strength.
"The future could be guaranteed for the next generation of PPP leadership, if we play it right," says a party insider.
This would be done by using the massive aid Pakistan expects to receive in return for its "good performance" in the "war on terror".
The plan would be to spend most of the aid in deeply rural areas where Pakistan's closest political battles are fought - the southern Punjab, eastern North West Frontier Province and northern Sindh province.
The linchpin in the plans is Mr Zardari. "If he can maintain this position and ensure the plan is carried out, Bibi [Ms Bhutto] will have won even in death," a PPP insider says.
The broad outlines of the plan are simple enough. But there are reasons to be sceptical.
In Pakistan, what can go wrong generally does go wrong.
It wasn't that long ago that the then President Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto were working on a grand master plan that fell apart with her assassination.
Mr Zardari's military hopes rest on the assumption - not universally shared - that the army can defeat the Islamist militants, and that it will co-operate with the PPP after years of mutual mistrust.
As far as popular support goes, the PPP has got its work cut out to reverse the country's ever-worsening economic woes.

[vinnomot] Proscribing Islamist Politics in Bangladesh: Lessons from and for Pakistan

Proscribing Islamist Politics in Bangladesh: Lessons from and for Pakistan
Taj Hashmi
Professor, Security Studies
Asia-Pacific Center for Security studies
Honolulu, Hawaii

Contrary to what Indian nationalist Gopal Krishna Gokhale (1866-1915) is said to have observed, "What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow", in view of the ongoing and least expected "Pakistanization" of Bangladesh, one may rephrase the statement as, "What Pakistan thinks today, Bangladesh thinks tomorrow". It is beyond the comprehension of many analysts and scholars that a country created in the name of Bengali nationalism, democracy and secularism, within five years of its inception adopted Islamism and autocracy turning away from the last vestiges of secularism, democracy and the rule of law.

The growing menace of Islamism and state-sponsored Islamization has been wrecking havoc to Pakistan's economy and socio-political structure, at times making experts and laymen wonder if the country has already become a "failed state" or on the verge of becoming one. The situation in Bangladesh, an erstwhile Pakistani province, is slightly different in this regard as Islamists do not pose any impending threat of taking over parts of the country, as in Pakistan.

Nonetheless, it has also inherited Islamism as a legacy of the past; Islamist terrorism, including suicide attacks, is no longer an unfamiliar phenomenon in Bangladesh; Islam-oriented parties have become decisive factors in forming governments. While overt or covert martial law has become normative, with periodic interregnums of dynastic civil oligarchies a la Pakistan, Islamism and state-sponsored cosmetic Islamization of the polity have remained well-entrenched since late 1975.

One may attribute these phenomena to the failure of the welfare state, not that different from what has happened in Algeria, Egypt, Afghanistan and The Sudan, among other Muslim countries. Nevertheless, we need other explanations as to why not only the crest-fallen masses have been drawn to Islamism (considered an alternative to the "failed" secular ideologies of democracy, nationalism and national-socialism by many), but also the bulk of political and intellectual elite, including some hitherto-radical leftists.

As poverty, bad governance and the "Global Jihad" breed Islamist nihilism, so is illegitimate rulers' exploiting religious sentiments of the people with a view to legitimizing their rule with state-sponsored Islamization. Islamization of the polity out of sheer political expediency, in the long run, could be disastrous for the polity as we find out in Pakistan, and on a minuscule level, in Bangladesh. What was once beyond one's imagination that Bangladesh, a country created in the name of secular nationalism, would one day adopt Islam as its "state religion", and pro-Pakistani Islamist political parties would play important role in running the polity, is a reality now.

However, despite the abysmally poor state of affairs in regard to governance and overall well-being of the people, there is a faint hope that Bangladesh will eventually reduce the level of Islamist obscurantism and insurgency in the near future. One is hoping against hope in view of the latest development in the country. The so-called Neutral Caretaker Government (NCG) is contemplating some bold steps towards curtailing the influence of Islamist political parties.

As reported in the media, the NCG is contemplating impose a ban on all religion-based political parties in accordance with the 1972 Constitution. It is indeed heartening that the provisions of the latest Representation of the People Order (RPO) stipulate that "a political party shall not be qualified for registration if any discrimination regarding religion, race, caste, language or sex is apparent in its constitution". Since Islamist parties allow membership exclusively to "religious Muslims", the RPO, in accordance with the Constitution, may legitimately de-register all religion-based parties.

In view of the above, as Bangladesh has lessons to learn from the Pakistani experience that unbridled growth of Islamism and even worse, state-sponsored Islamization of the polity, can be disastrous in the long run; similarly Pakistan may learn from the example of Bangladesh, where the government is thinking about proscribing Islamist political parties as a step towards containing, if not eliminating, Islamism. A successful deregistration of all Islamist political parties, especially the well-organized and well-funded Jamaat-i-Islami in Bangladesh, would be a good example for Pakistan and other countries confronting similar Islamist menace. This would also demolish the myth that Islamization of a polity is not reversible. We once nourished similar view about communism.

There is no reason to be complacent about allowing the so-called "constitutional" and "non-violent" Islamist parties like the Jamaat, Muslim Brotherhood and their likes. Although apparently they look different from al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Harkat Ul-Jihad al Islami (HUJI), the Taliban and similar Islamist outfits, there is no reason to assume that the Jamaat and Brotherhood believe in democracy and peaceful co-existence with liberal Muslims and non-Muslims. These proto-fascist organizations are committed to installing Islamist governments throughout the Muslim World by gradually infiltrating into every level of the polity, finally to takeover by violent means.

Let us hope Bangladesh will make an important breakthrough in delegitimizing Islamism by de-registering all Islam-oriented political parties as the first step. All democratic and secular Bangladeshis should come forward demanding the immediate de-registration of all religion-oriented parties. The civil society has to play an important role in this regard as some of the leading "secular nationalist" political parties are still going around with Islamists, weighing in the "vote bank" potential of the Islamist groups. Then again, Bangladesh alone cannot delegitimize Islamism in the country. Since deregistration of the various Islamist parties would be a major step towards their elimination process, countries and international donors can play a vital role in this regard. Having enough leverage to influence the policy makers in the country, they should press them hard to implement the proposed deregistration order vis-à-vis the Islamist parties.

Conversely, if Bangladesh fails to contain the so-called "constitutional and democratic" Islamist parties along with the clandestine Islamist ones now, under this unique military-backed Caretaker Government, the forthcoming elected government (in the event of elections taking place by December) is least likely to succeed in this regard irrespective of which party or coalition comes to power. Firstly, the major political parties in the country want to appease the Jamaat and similar Islamist groups out of political expediency; and secondly, the prevalent Islamization of the polity mainly due to bad governance, corruption and patronage of Islamism by various governments in the last thirty-odd years, Islamism has its special niece in the body politic of Bangladesh. In sum, we must realize what Islamist quagmire Pakistan has fallen into due to sheer negligence of the menace in its formative phase and the various governments' flirting with the Jamaat and its likes since the 1970s. Bangladesh government's success in deregistering Islamist parties would be a positive example for others, signaling a major victory in the "war on terror".

Free-Energy Battery Inventor Killed at Airport? – December 5, 2007

Free-Energy Battery Inventor Killed at Airport? – December 5, 2007
Here's another interesting article about the murdered inventor and the significance of his invention:
Official statement cites "natural causes" but others familiar with the disruptive potential of the inventor's technology to the existing power structure consider it a probable assassination. By Sterling D. Allan Pure Energy Systems News Copyright © 2007
On Nov. 11, inventor of a revolutionary, affordable, clean energy technology, M. DeGeus was found slumped in his car, totally unresponsive, in the long-term parking lot of the Charlotte Douglass International Airport in North Carolina. He was taken to the hospital and died a short time later. The autopsy suggested heart failure, so officials were saying the death was a result of a medical problem or natural causes, and not likely to be a homicide.
Those who were involved with his research are doubtful, citing, among other things, that he had been in good health at around age forty five. The timing is also suspicious. He was apparently on his way to Europe where he was to secure major funding for the development and commercialization of his technology, which could make oil obsolete. Charlotte Macklenburg Police detective, M. Conner, said that it would be a while yet before the toxicology report comes in on this case.
Tom Bearden a well-known figure in the cutting-edge, clean energy technology industry, wrote a lengthy report on the inventor, his death, and his technology. He said: "DeGeus was the inventor of a thin wafer-like material/device that somehow specially aligned the atoms or electron currents ongoing in that material, so that the wafer produced a constant amperage at a small voltage - continuous real power, or in other words a strange kind of "self-powering battery".
Bearden also speculates about the cause of death, citing a technology that shoots an electromagnetic beam that destroys the body's control of its heartbeat. He said there are two basic sizes of the Venus ECCM technique. One has a range of around thirty feet, and the other, about the size of a bazooka, has an effective range of around thirty feet, and the other, about the size of a bazooka, has an effective range of around 200 feet. Bearden claims to have been hit with such a device along with his colleague Ken Moore while at a restaurant several years ago. They felt the fibrillation and saw the would-be assassin about 20 feet away, with his suit coat pulled back, exposing a book-sized shooter. Fortunately, they were near an emergency exit and were able to get away before a lethal dose was received.
DeGeus had been in Salt Lake City a couple of weeks ago, demonstrating the technology to some people who were also seeking to raise money for its advancement. That group said that DeGeus was not the only person who knew how the technology works, and they hope to see it go ahead even though DeGeus is no longer around.around thirty feet, and the other, about the size of a bazooka, has an effective range of around 200 feet. [vinnomot] Another Alternative Energy Inventor Killed?

Another Alternative Energy Inventor Killed?

By Benjamin Fulford
9-3-8
A man by the name of Stefan Nystrom invented a way to generate energy from ocean waves that he claims would cost 5% of what coal energy does.
He set up a proto-type in Ghana and, initially, claims to have found many potential investors. However, suddenly problems started to pop up. The investors, originally extremely enthusiastic, started to back off. He was offered bribes in order to quit. Finally, he began to be harassed by Ghanaian police and mercenaries.
He contacted me in hopes of getting protection. I told him to come to Japan. He told me he was not allowed to leave the country. He said they had taken parts from his prototype. I said I would see what I could do. Before I could do anything, yesterday I received a disturbing set of phone calls from a very scared sounding Mr. Nystrom. "They tried to kill me three times today," he screamed into the phone. Then I lost contact with him, and his phone has been switched off.
In his last call, he asked me to make his technology public. So, here below is a description of his technology. Would people please pass it on and would as many people, in a tribute to a man who has probably been killed by mercenaries hired by the oil industry, and make sure that prototypes are developed.

[vinnomot] If that happens, we are in for a long hot summer.

The caretaker government has failed us
The regime is now in a state of panic and utter confusion and is frantically looking for an exit strategy. However, the fear is that in its utmost state of frustration, it might consider handing over the reins of the government to yet another element of extra-constitutional authority. If that happens, we are in for a long hot summer,
writes Shamsher Chowdhury

The Awami League failed us, so did the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the flamboyant regime of General Hussein Mohammed Ershad. Every regime cried wolf in the name of democracy. I often wonder with so many proclaimed champions of democracy in this country, why democracy remains as elusive as ever.
Without exception, the hallmark of all these parties which once ruled this country has been the indulgence in lies and deception. All of them promised us the moon but failed to ensure even the very basics for the vast majority of this country's population. It has become nearly impossible to trust anyone in this country, particularly those who occupy the seat of power. Even the best get drunk with the elixir of power soon after assuming the seat of power and almost immediately embarks upon trying to figure out how to stay in the seat of power forever.
While such scenarios continue to repeat themselves, the simple villagers, the day labourers, the deprived and the distressed continue to suffer year after year. All that is left for them to do is to pray and repose their absolute trust and faith in the creator.
Look at the much professed and glorified caretaker government. The holy month of Ramadan is here. Everybody promised tight control over unbridled rise of prices. Even the apex body of trade and commerce and no less than its president promised that there would be no undue hiking of prices during this Ramadan. Well, morning shows the day. If anything, the prices have gone up. In a statement expressing his frustration over the matter, the president of the apex body is now proposing that members of law enforcing agencies be deployed to monitor and control retailers at the market places. As far as I remember, similar attempts were also undertaken on earlier occasions but they did not succeed. It will not succeed this time.
Also, I have always felt very uncomfortable about the Bangladesh Rifles' sale of essentials at subsidized prices from the very day it began. The BDR is neither a trading house nor meant to be one and hence this venture cannot be sustainable. Surely this additional task is bound to create undue pressures affecting its regular work. This, among other things, sets a bad precedence.
Human Rights Watch, the New York-based and internationally reputed human rights group, has reported that at least 50 people were killed by the Rapid Action Battalion and the police just in the last two months. Brad Adams, the Asia director of the group, went on to say that there was enough evidence to suggest that these were nothing but extra-judicial killings. And now, the regime has set up a so-called 'independent' Human Rights Commission only to work at the behest of the government, a commission that is perceivably designed to ultimately legitimise and cover up abuses committed rather than ensure that justice is meted out.
I knew from day one that the Anti-Corruption Commission's drive against corruption could not be sustained. As a matter of fact, on the very subject I wrote an article titles 'Tackling corruption the sustainable way' in this very daily published in early March of this year. Hence, I am not a least bit surprised about the high profiled corruption suspects now being released on bail one after the other. Frankly, in this regard the ACC alone is to blame.
This regime, since its inception, has promulgated as many as 79 ordinances (new and revised), apparently aimed at 'ensuring transparency and accountability and reduce public suffering'. The question is, has the public suffering been reduced? Unfortunately, there has only been further complication of problems and the people's suffering has been on the rise. On the other hand, of the 79 ordinances promulgated, many of them have given rise to further controversies. How can ordinances conceived by a handful of bureaucrats and people who have had no previous experience in governance be effective and have any impact whatsoever on the people at large?
The regime is now in a state of panic and utter confusion and is frantically looking for an exit strategy. However, the fear is that in its utmost state of frustration, it might consider handing over the reins of the government to yet another element of extra-constitutional authority. If that happens, we are in for a long hot summer.

Fascist dynamics in South Asia Heightened as Ruling Bengali Hegemony of Bengal Looks for Brokers and Land Mafia in Uttarakhand to Gain More Killing Power! Anand Bazaar publishes the second instalment on Uttarakhand Industrialisation and the report makes heroes and icons of Brokers and the well known faces of land Mafia in Uttarakhand. Tilak Raj Behed who was rewarded by RSS for his role to mobilise Bajrang Dal for the infamous Babri Mosque demolition is singled out as a Hero of Industrialisation and the name of ND Tiwari is not mentioned at all. The reporter never knows either the Landscape or Human scape of Uttarakhand and brings out the Truth of Mass Mobilisation in favour of Industrialisation, say Tata Motors!Beher won his first Assembly election in United UP from haldwani constituency. He became so famous to mobilise the land Mafia and amassing unnatural wealth that he was soon discarded by BJP and was picked up by Congress. He was a powerful minister in ND Tiwari government in Uttarakhand. He was so powerful that land mafia tried its best to make him the next chief minister but failed!

Singur Stand Off continues as the second round of Peace talks  remain Inconclusive and the Tatas chose to dial Uttarakhand!Talks to end the Singur imbroglio remained inconclusive with the TMC-led opposition and govt panel agreeing to meet again.Meanwhile, the Left Front has convened an emergency meeting here tomorrow to discuss the Singur imbroglio. LF sources said the meeting would be held in the morning. With the crucial issue of  returning land to unwilling farmers in Singur remaining the only stumbling block, convening of the emergency meeting of the Front has fuelled speculation that the Singur problem was heading towards a solution.

Anand bazaar did not care to consult the only Bengali MLA in Uttarakhand assembly who represents Pant Nagar Gadar Pur Assembly seat. CPIM fielded a candidate there to kill the Bengali political representation in last election. he won second time also and CPIM lost deposit in all the forteen seats where it fielded CPIM candidates. Reba Biswas lost the post of Mayor in Rudrapur by just one Vote. This time also the Bengali candidate , as sister of my friend Shankar Chakrabarti, lost by slight margin. They are not consulted. Chakrabarti is the General secretary of Join UP Uttarakhand  Bengali Employees' Association, which fights for the Human, Civil rights, reservation, Mother tongue, reservation for the Bengali refugees in the Two states combined with Bengali Kalyan Samiti. Anand bazaar could not find them. Rudrapur has a big Refugee transit camp since 1964. he did not visit there. Anand Bazaar never tells how Uttarakhand is industrialised with Tatas there while the SIDCUL pockets have tribal under poverty line population of Bukshas as well as Tharus!

The Terai economy does not reflect the Geopolitics of Uttarakhand which has surpassed Kerala in literacy rate! Uttarkahnd  also means the Hill population which is under developed as ND Tiwari, KC Pant and other politicians in uttarakhand addressed the problems of Terai, their political base. Just cross Nainital, in Hills you would see women folk doing all the agricultural work in Kumaun as well as in Garwal.Only the male children and old males are the residents in Rural Hill areas of Uttarakhand which lives on MO Economy. We get no employment in Hills and depend on Tourism and military recruitment in Kumaun or Garwal regiments!

SIDCUL and Tatas may not change this Human scape though we have some developed Pockets in the Terai of  Haridwar and Rudrapur Districts!

Is Anand Bazaar aware of the Environment Movement in Uttarkhand? Chipko Movement, Anti Tehri big dam movement, Land and peasant movements, refugee movements since 1956? Dhimri Block Insurrection in 1958, Pant Nagar genocide in 1978? Women`s movement since beginning and getting momentum in nineties which resulted in Uttarakhand separate state?

The Bazaar did not consult local Bengalies, the refugees, Local residents, politicians other than Behed, social activists in Uttarakhand and it got the message for Bengal to industrialise on line of Uttarkhand!

On the other hand, Political activities to pull down the Super Slave UPA Government of India led by DR Manmohan Singh and controlled by the Italian Lady, Sonia Gandhi get expected momentum. The Left and right are United once again. Anti Imperialism in India gets the rarest Fascist Dynamics heightened as never before paving the ways of Blind nationalism and internal Imperialism as  these forces have proved themselves as the best Agents of US Zionist Corporate Imperialism!

Meanwhile, the old friend of the Marxists, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Saturday lashed out at AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa for demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying she was doing it to please the Left!

US-India nuclear accord approved

India would get access to US civilian nuclear technology
The group of nations which regulates the global nuclear trade has approved a US proposal to lift restrictions on selling nuclear technology to India.

The controversial deal now needs to be ratified by the US Congress before it can be implemented.

India says the deal is vital for it to meet its civil energy demands.

The approval came after India pledged to keep its nuclear non-proliferation commitments and to uphold a voluntary moratorium on testing atomic weapons.

Business Standard reports on Singur Peace talks :

The meeting between the West Bengal government and the Opposition in the presence of governor, Gopal Krishna Gandhi, seeking a breakthrough in the Singur impasse, appeared to have achieved success with the state accepting the 'land for land' formula, and offering 47 acres inside the factory complex now held by WBIDC and another 27 acres acres held by the power department inside the factory complex, along with state held (or 'khas') land of 43 acres and unclaimed land of 5 acres nearby.

In addition, the state panchayat department had identified farmland nearby and if any "unwilling farmer" wanted farmland, the state would finance his purchase of such land so that he could resume his lifestyle.

The negotiating sides had gone into recess and would meet again at 1600 hrs.

The land inside the factory complex would house a commercial complex and shops owned by "unwilling farmers" who had lost land to the 997 acre factory complex and had not accepted compensation.

I have written so many times that Indian Super Slaves of the Ruling as well as resistance hegemony dare not to defy Washington Dictations! We may see once again the minutes of the Parliamentary Nuke Opera during a false Trust Vote saving the Strategic Re alliance in US lead as well as the Nuke Deal and US Zionist Weapon Economy! I have reminded you so many times that I had launched Anti Imperialist Campaign as an individual just writing an interactive Novel in Print way back in 1994.Have I to believe that the urgency was not felt by our so called anti imperialism and anti fascist political forces in India and in South Asia. But they allowed the war zone to be transferred right into our heart! They transformed our nations as the new colonies of US neo Imperialism!

Government of India deliberately surrendered Nuclear Sovereignty. The Left knew it very well. The right wanted it from their NDA tenure in the central rule and they did everything to ensure that the Nuke Deal should go Auto!

How may you stop this!

The Nuclear Suppliers Group granted India a crucial waiver that
will enable it to carry out nuclear commerce! Nuclear supplier nations adopted by consensus in Viena on Saturday a US initiative to lift a 34-year-old embargo on nuclear trade with India, the Austrian delegation said.

PM Manmohan Singh hailed the NSG's move, describing it as a forward looking and momentous decision for India!Congress hailed the NSG waiver for India as historic and said it was a significant victory not only for the UPA but for all Indians!

US President George W Bush praised the 'strong leadership' of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the success at the NSG!

Violence returned to the Kashmir valley after a lull of over two weeks when a young demonstrator was killed and another critically wounded as police opened fire.

A peace process with India begun by Musharraf has stalled without solving the core dispute over Kashmir. Recent mass protests in Kashmir have reawakened Pakistani hopes that it might one day gain control of the Himalayan territory over which the countries have twice gone to war. India accuses Pakistani spies of helping bomb its embassy in Kabul.

Pakistan's new president Asif Ali Zardari was once so tainted by corruption allegations that he acquired the nickname "Mr Ten percent" among his countrymen and beyond. The widower of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto became Pakistan's new president Saturday after winning a landslide election victory that makes him a critical partner of the West against international terrorism.

Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, won the Presidential election !The new president will chair the joint military-civilian committee that controls Pakistan's nuclear weapons. He also will likely face calls for the release of Abdul Qadeer Khan, the scientist blamed for passing nuclear technology to Iran, North Korea and Libya, and questions about whether Khan knows more about secret atom bomb projects in other countries.

The election completes Pakistan's return to civilian rule nine years after Pervez Musharraf's military coup, but the country could be more democratic. The new head of state will be under pressure to resign from his political party and return powers that Musharraf took away from Parliament. Doubts remain about the independence of the judiciary purged by Musharraf.

Now Pakistan must respond to Western pressure to clamp down on Taliban and al-Qaida guerrillas attacking targets in both Pakistan and Afghanistan without provoking a tribal uprising or alienating a public already skeptical of Pakistan's role in Washington's war on terror!

Nupur Sharma of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) - the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - was elected the president of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) for 2008-09in New delhi on Saturday.

This might prove to be the Next Parliamentary political Trend setter overwhelmed by Fascist Hindutva supported by marxist capitalism. I am afraid that the projected face of Third Front Next prim Minister Mayawati fits nowhere in the latest scheme of ruling Hegemony in South Asia!

Meanwhile, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday approved 17 foreign investment proposals worth Rs.18.44 bn, which were earlier cleared by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) Aug 26. The proposals relate to sectors concerning chemical and petrochemicals, commerce, information and broadcasting, power, urban development, information technology and telecommunication, the government said here in a statement. However, nine proposals have been deferred that include one of Mumbai's Tata Investment Corp.

Proposals of Aditya Birla Telecom Ltd and Japan's Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd have been recommended for the consideration of the cabinet committee on economic affairs (CCEA), as the investments involved are above Rs.6 bn.

Euchner Industrie Beteiligungen Gmbh of Germany has been given approval to set up a wholly-owned subsidiary to carry out wholesale trade in electronic equipment and accessories.

Publising group IBN Lokmat News Pvt. Ltd has been allowed to induct foreign investment, direct or indirect, up to 13 percent of the issued, subscribed and paid-up share capital including present indirect foreign holding in the company.

Similarly, BBCW Channels Pvt. Ltd can now undertake downlinking and distribution of television channels in India. Also BBC Worldwide (India) Pvt. Ltd can make an amendment in the existing approval letter for inclusion of the term "downlinking".

Nandigram erupts again

TAMLUK, Sept. 5: While all eyes were on Singur and Raj Bhavan today, fresh violence flared up in Nandigram even as its O-C was transferred to West Midnapore..
A group of alleged CPI-M backed goons raided the Gokulnagar village in Nandigram around 1 a.m. and torched the house of Mrs Radharani Ari, a Bhumi Ucched Protirodh Committee (BUPC) member. The attackers set her house on fire and threatened her family members with dire consequences if they continued to stay in the house. Mrs Ari narrowly escaped with her life as she managed to leave from her house with her husband Mr Pratap Ari and her six children.
Mrs Ari was allegedly gang-raped twice on two different occasions during the trouble-period in Nandigram. "Seeing the house in flames, neighbours tried to douse the fire, but it was then partially torched," said Sheikh Sufian, a Trinamul Congress leader.Mrs Ari had returned to her house two months ago after staying in the displaced persons camp of the Nandigram block development office since April 2007. After she escaped from her house, she took shelter in Maheshpur, the neighbouring village in the wee hours.

US Corporate Imperialism gets Full Control in the New colonies of Divided Bleeding Geopolitics of South Asia! George Bush has settled everything in US interests so well that no Barrack Obama woul ever dare to reverese the trend defying strong most sentiment of Americanism dictated by Manusmriti, Aparteid, Hatred, Discrimination, Inequality, Injustice and Enslavement agenda of Hindu Zionist White Galaxy Order!

Driving home the point that he is for creating jobs in the US, Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama has favoured streamlining the process for the high-skilled H2B visas for Indians and other foreigners to make sure that employers were not "gaming" the system. Obama's remarks were actually in an obvious reference to the H1B visa category in which software engineers would fit into. It is unclear whether the Senator had inadvertently strayed into the realm of H1B visas in the course of making his thoughts on the issue known, but he made it clear he will ensure that the high skilled visas will not be manipulated.

"For those who don't know, the H2B visa programme is the programme whereby people with specialised skills, foreign nationals with specialised skills, are supposed to be able to come in and be sponsored by their employer. That's the idea," he said at a campaign event in Duryea, Pennsylvania yesterday.

The talks to end the Singur imbroglio remained inconclusive for the second day on Saturday with the Trinamool Congress-led opposition and a government panel agreeing to meet again on Sunday.

A press statement issued by Raj Bhavan in Kolkata after the meeting, presided over by West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi, said that the sides went into greater detail on the prospects of a land-based rehabilitation scheme in and around Singur project site.

"The governor trusts that the discussion will lead to a satisfactory conclusion tomorrow or on Monday," it said.

Emerging from Raj Bhavan, Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee told reporters here that talks will be resumed tomorrow.

Asked whether talks were positive, he replied, "I don't say it is negative."

The progress was conveyed to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.

Leaders of Left parties, BSP and Telugu Desam would meet President Pratibha Patil on Tuesday to demand immediate convening of Parliament session.

The meeting comes in the wake of the Left demand that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should quit for "lying to people and Parliament" on the Indo-US nuclear deal. They had also demanded the immediate convening of Parliament session to discuss several "burning" issues like the nuclear deal and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir as well as Orissa.

Left sources said the Rashtrapati Bhavan had fixed their appointment with the President on Tuesday. Reacting to reports on exchange of letters between the State Department and the then US House Foreign Affairs Committee on the deal in Januray, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat had said "the only option left to them (UPA) is that the Prime Minister should quit.

"But neither will they convene Parliament session nor will they quit.... It is a shameless government."

"Why are they afraid of Parliament? Why are they running away. When a serious situation had developed in Jammu and Kashmir, a session should have been convened. But by not convening the session, the government has shown complete disregard and contempt for Parliament," he had said.

The Monsoon Session was supposed to have started in August, but the government has decided to convene the next session from October 17.

No extradition treaty with India: Dhaka
27 Aug, 2008, 1339 hrs IST, IANS

DHAKA: Bangladesh has once again rejected an Indian proposal for a bilateral extradition treaty to exchange criminals hiding in each other's territory, an official was quoted as saying in a newspaper report on Wednesday.

Any such treaty must involve others of the eight-member South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Dhaka insists.

The three-day ninth home-secretary level meeting between Bangladesh and India begins here on Friday, with New Delhi likely to press for an extradition treaty, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

"India is keen to sign an extradition treaty with Bangladesh only, but Dhaka is not interested as the treaty should involve all members of the regional forum," an unnamed foreign ministry official told the newspaper.

The issue has been pending for long, even as both the South Asian neighbours accuse each other of illegal movement through a 4,300 km porous border.

Besides common law-breakers, India says several leaders and activists of the militant outfits of its northeastern region are operating from Bangladeshi soil.

Dhaka responds with a similar accusation about "political fugitives" taking shelter in India.

In 2002, India sought Dhaka's cooperation in mutual legal assistance, counter-terrorism and extradition.

The Bangladesh foreign ministry official said SAARC leaders at their recent summit in Colombo signed an agreement on mutual legal cooperation and counter-terrorism, covering the extradition issue.

"Since a multilateral agreement is already in place, Bangladesh is assessing whether there is any need for a bilateral one with India on exchange of criminals," he said.

Dhaka reckons that criminals could be also exchanged "in goodwill gestures", the newspaper said, quoting a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) official, who added: "India has so far handed over six Bangladeshi criminals. It means that they can nab the other thugs and hand them over to us."

India has given a list of over a hundred camps operating on Bangladesh territory by northeastern fugitives. Dhaka denies they exist.

Bangladesh handed over an updated list of 1,648 Bangladeshi criminals hiding in India at the director-general level border conference between Bangladesh Rifles and Border Security Force held in Dhaka recently. The Indian side gave a list of 464 Indian criminals.

Taking no chances, Tata team dials Uttarakhand
SIMI KAMBOJ
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1080906/jsp/bengal/story_9795819.jsp
Mumbai, Sept. 5: The Tatas have sounded the Uttarakhand government on the possibility of shifting the small-car project to Pantnagar if they decide to leave Singur, a top government official said.

"I have had talks with Tata Motors officials yesterday. They told us about the problems they are facing in Singur. But they said they haven't yet decided on a pullout," Uttarakhand chief secretary Indu Kumar Pande told The Telegraph.
Pande said the Tata officials hadn't discussed the issue of land allotment for the small-car project. "They haven't specifically asked us for the land. In case they do, we will try our best to accommodate them here," Pande added.
A spokesperson for Tata Motors refused to comment.
Pande said the 3,390-acre Pantnagar industrial estate currently has about 200 acres to spare.
The Tatas were among the first automobile companies to come to Pantnagar two years ago and are seen as catalysts of change in the region.

In April 2006, the automaker was allotted 976 acres at the rate of Rs 125 per square metre. Since then, the land rates have soared 20 times to Rs 2,500 per square metre.
Both Pande and S.P. Tri- pathi, the general manager of the Integrated Industrial Estate at Pantnagar, said the Tatas have about 300 acres of surplus land at the plant where they make the Ace — the sub 1-tonne pick-up truck.
"Out of the 976 acres allotted to them, they have built a plant on around 300 acres. Another 300 acres have been reserved for 62 vendors that the Tatas have brought with them. That leaves about 300 acres of surplus land. In case they seek more land, we'll be able to allot them 300 to 400 acres around the estate," said Tripathi.
There seems to be a discrepancy between Pande's and Tripathi's statements on how much land can be given to the Tatas. One reason for this is that in states like Uttarakhand, forest and semi-agricultural land can be turned into plots for industrial use at a mere flourish of a pen without having to worry about Mamata-style protests.
Pantnagar presents several advantages: the Tatas could settle for less than 1,000 acres since many of the vendors for the Ace project, like Tata Ryerson, are also involved in the Singur project.
Tata Motors is a pioneer in Pantnagar. Ashok Leyland and Bajaj Auto followed the Tatas into the Pantnagar industrial enclave.
Other industrial players in Pantnagar include Dabur, Nestle and Britannia.
Snack food maker Haldiram's has also come calling.
As pioneers who catalysed change in the region, the Tatas could push the Uttarakhand government for concessional land prices if they decide to move the small-car project to the state.
Pantnagar is about 235km from Delhi and scores over Singur because of tax breaks available to hill states and the advantage of a small airport that provides connectivity to the capital.
In Bhopal, Union comm- erce and industry minister Kamal Nath said he spoke to Ratan Tata over telephone and offered him Madhya Pradesh as an alternative destination to set up the Nano plant in the event of the industrialist quitting Bengal.

Baul artistes against forceful acquisition
SINGUR, Sept. 5: In the midst of the Trinamul Congress sponsored agitation in Singur, a group of baul singers have come forward, who have taken the onus upon themselves to unite farmers across the state. The united farmers would together resist the 'forceful' acquisition of farmland for industrialisation. The Statesman team visited the dharna site in Singur last night and spoke these singers who been putting up in Singur from 24 August. They have come from various places in North 24-Parganas to participate in the indefinite dharna.
One of them, Mr Tapan Ghosh, a resident of Gumo Habra in North 24-Parganas said: "During the day we listen to the speeches of the political leaders and try to gauge the scenario. At night we compose songs based on the information collected during the day. Protesting against the state government's policy of setting up industries on farmland, we went to Nandigram last year and carried out a campaign against the CPI-M leadership. This time we have come to Singur in response to Miss Mamata Banerjee's call for protest against land acquisition. We have decided to contribute to the ongoing movement by performing shows at villages that would encourage farmers to take up a movement for their rights. The songs which we have composed would expose the true character of the CPI-M and the Left Front."
Mr Ghosh belongs to a family that owns 20 bigha of land in Guma Habra. "If I do not support the Singur farmers at this hour, I would not find anyone by my side when someone tries to grab my agricultural plot at gunpoint on the plea of development." Mr Ghosh said.
"The CPI-M, which had fought against the zamindars during the 70's, has now become an agent of big industrial houses. If we remain silent at such a crucial juncture, we will be harming the next generation," baul singer, Mr Nirmal Das, a resident of North 24-Parganas said. With the Trinamul being criticised for allegedly blocking NH-2, the baul singers said that they have taken a unique initiative to ensure smooth movement of vehicles on the road during the night. "We perform shows in one flank of the road. Because thousands of supporters throng near the stage to hear our songs, the other flank of the road remains open for smooth traffic," Mr Das said. n SNS

Jharkhand govt invites Tatas to set up Nano factory in state
6 Sep, 2008, 1420 hrs IST, PTI
JAMSHEDPUR: Assuring land and other facilities to Tata Motors for setting up Nano car plant in the state, Jharkhand Deputy Chief Minister Sudhir Mahto said on Saturday that a letter to company chairman Ratan Tata would be sent in a day or two.
"Jharkhand has been home for the Tatas for over a century and they have made their place in the world. They need not seek land for their new plant elsewhere... Chief Minister Shibu Soren has already assured all facilities if Tata Motors wished to shift its Nano factory (from West Bengal) to the state," Mahto said at the sidelines of a pilot training institute programme here.
Asked to specify the time-frame in which the land would be allotted should the Tatas opt for Jharkhand as the Nano factory site, the deputy CM said, "Let them first decide whether they want to set up the new plant - in Ranchi or Jamshedpur or elsewhere in Jharkhand. I assure them that land will be provided to them in the shortest possible time."
Asked how it would be possible when a number of prominent companies, including Tata Steel and ArcelorMittal, had signed MoUs with the government for setting up units and were in the waiting list, Mahto, who is also the state Industry Minister said, "We will provide land to all companies interested in setting up their plants in Jharkhand."
About land for Tata Steel's proposed 12 mt integrated greenfield project at Saraikela-Kharswan and ArcelorMittal's unit at Torpa, he said, "Land acquisition process is on and we are expecting work to begin soon."
The state had drawn up a new rehabilitation and resettlement policy to help people likely to be affected by the proposed projects, he added.
Govt allows export of 'Pusa 1121' rice
6 Sep, 2008, 1405 hrs IST, IANS
NEW DELHI: The government has allowed the export of the Pusa 1121 variety of rice from Oct 15 this year, according to a senior official.
This variety is exported mainly to the Gulf countries.
"Pusa 1121 rice will be exported with effect from Oct 15 this year," a senior official of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) said on Friday. He did not wish to be identified.
Traders will have to register themselves with the Apeda before they start exporting Pusa 1121, which is nearly as good as basmati rice.
This variety is grown mainly in Punjab and Haryana, two of India's key rice-producing states.
The official said the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has lifted the ban on the export of Pusa 1121. Traders will be allowed to export the rice at a minimum export price (MEP), which is yet to be decided.
He said that export of this rice would be permitted only from the ports of Kolkata, Kandla, Kakinada, Navi Mumbai, Mundra and Pipavav.
The government March 31 this year banned the export of non-basmati rice, and increased MEP for basmati rice to $1,200 (Rs 54,000) per tonne to rein in inflation.
The government is considering lifting the ban completely by November this year in view of a good monsoon and a good paddy crop.
The agriculture ministry on Friday said that the area under rice cultivation had gone up to nearly 36.1 million this year as against 34.5 million hectares September 4 last year.
India is likely to export a record quantity of basmati rice in the current fiscal. In July alone, traders got the official go-ahead for exporting 165,148 metric tonnes of basmati rice.
In July this year, Apeda issued 658 registration-cum-allocation certificates (RCAC) to traders to enable them to export basmati rice worth nearly $252 million (Rs.11.34 billion).
In 2007-08, the estimated production of rice stood at 96.43 million tonnes, wheat 78.40 million tonnes, coarse cereals 40.73 million tonnes, maize 19.31 million tonnes, pulses 15.11 million tonnes, and oilseeds 28.82 million tonnes.
The government has set a target of achieving an annual production growth rate of 3.7 per cent for all food grains including rice.
In absolute terms, however, the government target is to achieve a production of 129 million tonnes of rice by 2011-12 since the domestic demand for rice by that time has been projected at 128 million tonnes.
Hence, according to official estimates, this level of production can be achieved only if the yield per hectare for rice goes up to an average 3,000 kilograms up from only 1,930 tonnes now.

SEZ exports to grow over four-fold by 2008-09: Assocham
4 Sep, 2008, 2207 hrs IST, IANS
NEW DELHI: Controversies apart, exports from special economic zones (SEZs) have registered a growth of 192 per cent between 2005-06 and 2007-08, and are likely to see a phenomenal 451 per cent rise by 2008-09, according to assessment by an industry lobby released Thursday.
The study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) cited official data to say that after the SEZ Act came into being in 2005-06, exports from these zones rose from Rs 228.4 billion to Rs 666.38 billion in 2007-08, marking a 192 per cent growth.
"In 2007-08, the total exports of India as per official figures between April-December are estimated at Rs 478,522.52 crore (Rs.4,785 billion), thus their contributions to the total domestic exports have gone up from 5.004 percent in 2005-06 to 13.93 percent in first nine months of 2007-08," the report said.
"By 2011-12, we expect SEZ exports going up to over Rs.515,891.2 crore (about Rs.5,159 billion or a little over $125 billion) as by then realistically, all the controversies relating to SEZs would be resolved," said Assocham president Sajjan Jindal while releasing the chamber assessment.
