Jamat's Double Standard:they'd want to be on time for Ugly Pants Night at the country club. Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Bangladesh's past

SIR – Regarding your recent article on Bangladesh ("Guilty at birth?", December 8th). The party I lead, Jamaat-e-Islami, strongly denies any link with the atrocities committed during the war of independence in 1971. It also denies any involvement whatsoever with the abduction and murder of journalists and academics. I would also point out that I was never a member of Al Badr nor did I ever lead that organisation. Furthermore, I ceased to become the head of Jamaat's student wing from October 1971 and did not hold any post in Jamaat until long after Bangladesh's liberation.

Jamaat is a moderate Islamic party that believes in democracy and human rights and is strongly committed to upholding the rule of law. Jamaat's position has always been that if any allegations made by a future war-crimes tribunal against a member of Jamaat are proved to be true in a court of law, then we are ready to face the consequences. In the past 36 years, no one, not even the relatives of the victims' families, has taken any step to institute legal proceedings against the alleged perpetrators of war crimes.

[vinnomot] Re:CTG invited 19 political parties for dialogue

According to a latest press report, CTG of Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmed recently sent invitation for political dialogue to 19 political parties including BNP and Awami League. BNP, Awami League, Jamat, Jatiyo Party ,LDP, and Islami Oikkyo Jote are the parties represented in the past parliament. Who are the other parties invitations sent. Most other parties are "Bibriti Party" and has no public support other than their own support. Even some of those "Bibriti Party" has no official address.

Why giving them such importance for a national dialogue.

What are  the motive behind such inviatation to the "Bibriti Party" ?

[vinnomot] Re: [Sonar Bangladesh] I have faith in Allah and in people: Says Nizami

Friends

The witty "Dhakais" had always jokes on almost every tid bits of life. One day a Garowon(Horse cart driver) aksed for a fare to the would be passenger but the passenger in return bargained which made the witty Dhakaia Garowan say " Ashtey kon sab gorai hunley hasbo"(please speak slowly if the horse hears the price he will be laughing at you !!!!!!)

Friends, so is the case with the janwar murderer and rapist and close associate of go azam says he has faith in Allah. What a lie which cannot be weighed with any of the present politicians practice as we know.

Ofcourse he has faith not on Allah but on the Pakis the marauders and blood thirsty janwarswho let lose of terror alongwith with their Golams like go Azam, nizami, mujahedi, kader Mollah and unfortunately our Netris beai Janwar mosharraf. The so-called Janwars helped the Pakistanis to rape their mothers, sisters and kill their own kith and kin and destroy houses and loot and plunder the whole of then East Pakistan.

These murderers got free due to the weak and motivated and poluted politics and by the nurturing of the so-called demo lovers are well set in our political arena.

I feel that there be no news or discussion about these Janwars at all. It is the problem of the netris who took them in their Lap and benefitted politically with the bestial might. The Bangladeshis hates these beasts as well the connivers who rehabilitated them for political gain.

Let Bangladesh be clean from political thugs and the janwars.

[vinnomot] Re: [khabor.com] Nizami says arrest looms

Millitary and superpowers backed so called CTG will not only smash our main politcal parties', they will do every possible deals and acts to sell out our nation.

They are doing merely out of their scope, these are not the things they supposed to do rather just get out after conducting a free and fair election within prescribed time frame by BD Constitution.

Nizami says arrest looms

Dhaka, May 14 (bdnews24.com) – Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami said Wednesday that a move was underway to arrest him.

"I know the move is on to arrest me. But I am not worried about it at all. I have faith in Allah. There are people to look into the matter," Nizami told reporters at the party headquarters in Moghbazar, a day after the Anticorruption Commission pressed charges against him and others in the GATCO scam case.

"I was never involved in crime or corruption so that I should feel psychologically shaken."

"I have been implicated in false cases before," he added.

The Anticorruption Commission pressed charges against 25 people including former prime minister Khaleda Zia, her son Arafat Rahman Coco and Nizami.

Investigation officer of the GATCO scam case, Zahirul Huda, told bdnews24.com that 12 accused in the case were shown fugitives. Nizami and former ministers M Saifur Rahman, Mannan Bhuiyan, M Shamsul Islam, MK Anwar and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury were among them.

Nizami Wednesday demanded withdrawal of all false cases including the GATCO and Barapukuria ones immediately.

Nizami demanded the release of former prime ministers Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina in a rare gesture and said that there was no reason trial of the cases against them could be hampered if they were on bail."

"There is no alternative to the release of the two leaders for an election acceptable to all," Nizami said.

"An independent and sovereign Bangladesh is the result of democratic movement. People of this country were always respectful to democracy. They had never accepted any attack on democracy," he added.

Nizami Wednesday alleged that the government had made a move to destroy "political leadership" in the country in the name of depoliticising.

He demanded that the election be held by October and the electoral roll be finalised by June 30.

The demands also include freedom of all arrested on political grounds.

The Jamaat ameer faulted chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed's speech to the nation.

He alleged that Fakhruddin had stepped beyond his jurisdiction and pushed dialogue into uncertainty.

"The Election Commission is tasked with preparing a flawless voter list and holding a free, fair and peaceful election. But the EC troubled its main task by intervening in some other tasks beyond its jurisdiction," Nizami said.

The Jamaat leader said: "A move to turn the country into a 'vassal state' was on."

Nizami said that Bangladesh had fallen victim to a deep-rooted conspiracy by the "imperialist and regional influential forces" that could not stand Bangladesh's successes in the past 15 years of democratic rule.

According to the constitution, such a government could not take any decision on policy matters, but this government had been doing it, he added.

Over the past few days and weeks, much ink has been devoted to Barack Obama's potentially tricky relationship with the Jewish community.

Had his relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his former pastor and sympathetic voice on Palestine, caused harm? Would his pledge to meet without preconditions with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad turn off the pro-Israel crowd? Did the developed tensions between the Jewish and Black communities present a gap too wide to bridge?

Certainly the topic has been on Obama's mind, as during the course of this past week he has given several interviews to prominent Jewish journalists on the very subject.

But lost in the process is, perhaps, a broader question: Does the Jewish vote really matter all that much for the Illinois Democrat? The topic, perhaps surprisingly, carries no clear consensus among some academics and analysts.

There is wide agreement on three reasons why the Jewish vote matters. Despite lacking overall numbers, Jews participate in the political process in large percentages, representing some of the more high-profile activists. They also have, historically, been major fundraisers for both political parties. And they tend to reside -- for one reason or another -- in some of the country's most significant "swing states."

For Obama, two of those three may not be major political concerns. The senator's ability to drum up grassroots support provides him with a robust activist base, somewhat but not entirely irrespective of opinion makers. And his fundraising apparatus, which relies on more than 1.5 million donors -- many of them of the low-dollar variety -- means he doesn't have to lean on major financiers. As one prominent Jewish Democratic fundraiser told The Huffington Post, "Obama doesn't need me and that isn't necessarily a bad thing." Indeed, Obama's success in bringing in campaign cash, longtime political observers say, has fundamentally altered the relationship between candidate and constituency group.

"If you are raising $40 million and month, month after month, only some of it is coming from Jewish community," said Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the Rothenberg Political Report. "It does dilute the importance of one group of contributors. Hollywood is, in this regard, also less important... organized labor may be less important as well."

It is in the numbers and blocs of Jewish voters (not money and activism) where Obama, theoretically, has the most to lose or gain. According the 2007 American Jewish Community Yearbook, there are approximately 6.4 million Jews in the United States, roughly two percent of the country's population. And yet Jews are more-highly concentrated in important political locales such as Florida, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

"The Jewish vote is most important as a vote," explained Mark Mellman, president of The Mellman Group, one of the nation's leading public opinion researchers. "And the truth is that in some of these swing states the difference between getting 55 and 65 percent of their votes can be the difference between winning a losing."

This synopsis is technically true. However, as other analysts note, the presidential race would ultimately have to be historically close for the Jewish vote to be numerically decisive. There are, for instance, approximately 145,000 Jews in Ohio. If 80 percent were eligible to vote and 80 percent of those eligible actually did go to the polls (both high estimates) that would mean that that roughly 93,000 votes were up for grabs in that state. If Obama won 74 percent of that vote -- the same percentage that John Kerry carried nationally in 2004 -- he would have approximately 68,000 Ohio Jewish votes. If he only received 61 percent of the vote -- which he is receiving in the most recent Gallup Poll -- that number drops to 56,700, a difference of 11,300 votes. In Ohio, such a loss could make a difference. But the state was decided by more than ten times that margin in 2004.

Jews do make up larger shares of the population in both Pennsylvania and Florida. However, in some of the "new" swing states -- Colorado, New Mexico, and Iowa, for example -- the Jewish population is only (roughly) 80,000, 11,000 and 6,000 respectively.

"While a relatively moderate Republican candidate with rock-solid Israel-supporter credentials like John McCain may well reach or even surpass the Jewish-vote record for a GOP presidential contender - especially if his opponent is Barack Obama - a few extra Jewish votes in states already pretty much guaranteed as either Democratic or Republican aren't going to make that much of a difference," The Jerusalem Post's Caley Ben-David opined this past week.

Population totals asides, Jews do, according to statistics, tend to be a much more reliable constituency than say, the young. In terms of a base, it is a solid one to have. More significant, perhaps, is that the group's issues are shared by others -- meaning appeals to Jewish voters brings support from more than just Jews.

"Remember that unlike primary season, when it comes to the real thing, it is winner take all format," said Jonathan Sarna, a professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis University. "And that means that every vote will be extremely important. And I don't think Obama wants to take any chances in a critical state. Moreover, there are others who clearly care about some of the same issues that lots of Jews care about, notably Israel."

As Sarna notes, Obama stands to gain the backing of some evangelicals and a firmer base among Democrats by demonstrating support for the state of Israel. Such a stance, moreover, brings with it an image benefit, mainly, the perception of strength within foreign policy circles. But perhaps the most compelling reason for Obama to pursue the Jewish vote is to counteract the inroads that his Republican opponents are trying to make. Indeed, as recent history shows and Democrats concede, a political turf war over the Jewish community is already on hand.

"I've always said that one of the things the Republicans were trying to do under Rove and [Tom] DeLay, and I never underestimated them, was to use Israel to turn the Jewish community against the Democratic Party. That mean stopping money to Jewish Democrats but more importantly it means affecting opinion makers," said Ira Forman, head of the National Jewish Democratic Council. "This year there are some real numbers here. I think the McCain's folks are looking at these numbers and they are figuring out a micro-strategy - they are doing this with African Americans and other groups as well with the Jews. If they can drive the Jewish vote down 20 percent in these states it could make a difference. I don't know how good the McCain people are but the Rove and his minions e were doing this on every constituency out there."

[vinnomot] FORECAST : Arrival of South-West Monsoon Rains

Monsoon to strike Kerala coast on May 29: IMD

ASHOK B SHARMA
Posted online: Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at 1908 hrs IST

New Delhi, May 14: The official weather forecasting agency, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the South-West Monsoon may arrive at the Kerala coast on May 29, which is three days earlier than the scheduled date. The forecast is subjected to a model error of +/- 4 days

With the strengthening of monsoon winds and widespread rainfall activity, the South-West Monsoon advanced into southeast Bay of Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands on May 12, almost eight days in advance. The monsoon system usually advances by its two wings – the eastern wing which advances over Bay of Bengal and the western wing which advances over the Arabian Sea.

Quoting the forecasts of global agencies, Center for Ocean Land Atmosphere Studies (COLA), International Research Institute for Climate Studies and Policy (IRI) and the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast, FE on May 13 had said that the South-West Monsoon may arrive at the Kerala coast about five to seven days earlier.

The IMD while making its present forecast has taken into consideration six predictors – minimum temperature over north-west India, pre-monsoon rainfall peak over southern peninsula, outgoing long wave radiation over south China Sea, lower tropospheric zonal wind over southeast Indian Ocean, upper tropospheric zonal wind over the east equatorial Indian Ocean and outgoing long wave radiation over south-west Pacific region.

The IMD, in its initial forecast made on April 16, this year had said that average cumulative rainfall over the country in the four-month monsoon season would be 99% of the long period average of 89 cm. This forecast is subjected to a model error of +/-5 %.

NEW DELHI, MAY 12: Here is some good news. The South-West Monsoon is likely to hit Kerala coast about five to seven days before the scheduled date of June 1.

A convection developing in the Arabian Sea may cause a strong south equatorial current to push the monsoon system to the Kerala coast at an earlier date, according to some global forecast models. The forecast made by the US-based Center for Ocean Land Atmosphere Studies (COLA) shows the arrival of dark monsoon clouds along Kerala coast in May 20-28. Another US based agency, International Research Institute for Climate Studies (IRI) has predicted heavy rains on the west coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is expected to forecast the arrival of the monsoon at the Kerala coast within next two days.

Already the persistence of convection over southeast Bay of Bengal has caused early arrival of the monsoon in the Andaman Seas. Usually the south-west monsoon arrive at south Andaman Seas around May 15. This year it arrived on May 10.

According to IMD, the formation of low pressure area in the adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal coupled with further strengthening of westerlies would further cause the advancement of the monsoon in its eastern arm. The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast has also predicted on this line.

Thus both the eastern and the western arms of the monsoon system are likely to cause early arrival of the monsoon on the mainland. Recent events in Malaysia, Thailand and forecasts by global agencies confirm early arrival of the monsoon.
