[vinnomot] Demarcate place of worship as protected area, barring any kind of political activities

We must do everything possible to stop spread of provocative violent religious thoughts. As a step to curve the use of religious institution by religious bigots, government must take some short and long term planning. This becomes evidently a must to do after the riot situation which prevailed on April 10th and April 11th centering our national mosque Baitul Mukarrom by extremist religious hooligans.
Immediate Step:
  • Government must declare demarcate place of worship as a protected area, barring any kind of political activities
  • If any religious place of worship found to be in violation of this rule then their registration will be canceled
  • If any religious place of worship found to be in violation of this rule then their tax exemption status will canceled
  • If any religious place of worship found to be in violation of this rule then they will be black listed and there will be no governmental financial support with tax payer's money.
  • Government form an Enforcement Surveillance Committee under ministry of religious affairs comprising members from different governmental organization who will investigate, report and enforce the law
  • Government opens a "Public Complain Box" under Ministry of Religious Affairs where ordinary citizens and devotees can submit their grievances.

Long term steps:
  • Ministry of Religious Affairs formulate especial workshop program around the country where prayer leaders, administrative official of religious institution will be given detail about the responsibility of  tax exempted religious institution. This will be similar to Anti Corruption Commission media campaign.
  • Awareness program will be launched about the does and don'ts for a public tax exempted religious organization.
  • Prayer leaders will be asked to launch awareness initiative during especial congregation.
  • Ministry of Information will launch public awareness program to encourage citizens to file written complaint with "Public Complain Box" under Ministry of Religious Affairs similar to Anti Corruption Commission media campaign.
I hope decision makers will take these signs of religious intolerance as unhealthy phenomenon for a nation building process and take initiative to stamp out religious bigotry. Religious convictions are out of sheer belief for eternal peace but the religious bigotry is out of sheer hatred.

Sincerely
Shamim Chowdhury

[vinnomot] Yusuf Estes Explains 'Beauty of Islam'

Yusuf Estes Explains 'Beauty of Islam'
P.K. Abdul Ghafour, Arab News

Texas-based Islamic preacher Yusuf Estes delivers a lecture at the Saudi German Hospital Auditorium in Jeddah. (AN photo)

JEDDAH, 13 April 2008 — The strident smear campaign against Islam and Muslims following 9/11 in the US encouraged many American men and women to study and embrace Islam, Yusuf Estes, a leading Islamic scholar and preacher from Texas, said on Friday night.

"They are doing the job for us," Estes, himself a convert, said while delivering a lecture on "The Beauty of Islam" at the Saudi German Hospital Auditorium in Jeddah. However, he reminded Muslims of their big responsibility in spreading the message of Islam among others.

Hamoud Al-Shimimry of the Islamic Education Foundation also highlighted the importance of dawa work. "If a person embraces Islam as a result of your work, it is better than any other achievement in this world," he told the participants, quoting Qur'anic verses and Sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He said a Filipino had helped 25 fellow nationals to learn and embrace Islam.

Estes said having peace of mind is the ultimate beauty of Islam. "Wealth and luxuries cannot provide the ultimate happiness to human beings. But the peace of mind we obtain through the faith in God and engaging in righteous deeds makes us happy," he said.

Total submission to God and His will is also the beauty of Islam, he explained. "Amazing is the case of a believer. If anything good happens, he thanks God; while if anything bad befalls him, he remains patient," he said quoting a Saying of the Prophet. "If any calamity, such as the death of a beloved person, occurs a Muslim says, 'We are from God and to Whom we all return.' This is the beauty of Islam."

Estes described the Holy Qur'an as an amazing book, adding that millions of Muslims around the world have memorized it. "No other book, including the Bible, has been memorized by so many people," he added.

Estes ridiculed those who make false propaganda that Muslim children are learning how to make bombs at Islamic schools. "Muslims are the first enemies of terrorists," he said.

He said many people were not embracing Islam not because of the lack of knowledge but because they don't care. Asked whether he would invite US President George W. Bush to Islam, he said: "We pray to God that He may guide him to Islam. Islam gives us the right direction and it removes our blindness about the mystery of this universe. I am very happy to be a Muslim and part of the 1.5 billion-strong world of Islam," he said.

Estes advised Muslims to be patient in testing times. "Allah does not guarantee the believers a smooth and comfortable life in this world. Hardships in this world will bring them more reward in the hereafter," he said.

Estes, a former priest and missionary who embraced Islam in 1991, gave another lecture on "Muslim Youth in Today's Society" at the same venue on Thursday. He advised parents to spent "quality time" with their children. "This will not only help educate them in all aspects of life but reduce their tendency to indulge in bad habits when left alone," he added. He answered questions from boys and girls from different schools in Jeddah.

A Filipino declared his intention to embrace Islam during the event and Estes helped him to pronounce the Shahada (There is no god but God and Muhammad is His messenger).

Sheikh Mohamed Subhi and Wajdi Akkari from Jeddah Dawa Center also addressed the audience. In his welcome speech, professor Mohamed Abubaker of King Abdul Aziz University introduced Estes while Mohamed Ali Chundakkadan gave a vote of thanks. The event was jointly organized by the Indian Islahi Center and Jeddah Dawa Center.

[vinnomot] Re: HASINAS MIG CHURI CASE

---------- Forwarded Message ----------

It is a pleasure to be back again after dealing with flu for a long time. Regardless what some anti Bangladesh writers portray Mr Mohiuddin, his suggestions demands consideration.

Bangladesh seemed to have enjoyed more comfortable socio economic,  during the army personal turned politicians (Ziaur Rahman, Ershad) rule, compared to the past so called democratic governments (Mujib, Khaleda and Hasina).

Parliamentary democracy had already proven impotent for Bangladesh. It is noway the fault of the system but the political culture of Bangladesh. Specialy the existance of family dynasty have made two simple housewives into Iron Ladies, who became as authoritarian as any dictator. Among these two, though Khaleda Zia had shown her willingness for dialogues with her main opposition leader(s), the later always opposed such intiative under "illogical pretext". Thus placing the fate of Bangladesh into unknown territory.

Placing party nomination for Parliamentory elections at  high stake, the two major political parties, have encouraged and attracted a handfull numbers of the corrupt and the terrorist harboring criminals to participate in peoples representation. Thus deteriorating Bangladesh's socio-economical and political conditions.

Though both the major political parties are big mouth in echoing "democracy", none practices such among themselves. Such unproductive attitude only contributed for Khaleda and Hasina to act as God among the party leaders and activists. Mandhandling of a few Awami Leage presidium members and constant threat in the recent past, to RATS ( Rajjak, Amu, Tofail and Suranjeet Sen Gupta) for possesing reform ideas, pictures the fragile democracy in  Awami Leage itself.

On the counter part, BNP is no better. As they depend so heavily on Khaleda Zia for decission making that, with her in jail, the party leaders are in geopardy about their role. And they have engaged in serious confrontation with each other which may bring the colapse of the party itself.

Along with Mr Mohiuddin's suggestions, may I add the following:

1. The party chief should be directly elected by the party activists under secret ballot, and such elections should be held every year.

2. The party members who  have different approach to party policies should be protected from malignment and physical assault.

3. Any call/plan to obstruct dialogues with the opposing political parties should be discouraged.

4. No person should be placed in important party posts, if the person have been convicted in the court of law, or had a past of corruption, or terrorism or anarchism.

5. Awarding party nomination for monetary gain should be banned.

6. Close relatives of the party leaders, the leaders themsleves , or the party activists could not be eligible to participate directly or indirectly in public works. Any party leader or activist found to violate such, should be barred from politics for good and should be prosecuted for corruption charge.

7. No employee of the state should be eligible to  become affiliated with any political party. Violators should be fired if found guilty, and all his/her benefits and previlages from the state should be forfeited.

8. The party would be held soley responsible for any death, taunting, threats or destruction of private or public properties, caused by the party activists in the name of strike or procession. And should be subjected to prosecution and would be hold liable to compensate in full for such anarchy.

No political leaders /activits should be allowed to carry personal vendetta by using party influence.

9. Students and Labor politics should be free from the mainstream political parties. During the study session or work hours, no student or labor should be eligible to participate in any sort of activity which is not part of their education/work.

10. Call for opinion among  public from different background should be initiated before making serious state affairs, such as bilateral agreement (border, transit, water) or business agreement with multi national companies. All such agreement should be made public via the the media, and no secrecy on this regard should be entertained.

11. No political party / leader should be allowed to invite or initiate any dialogue with foreign emisseries about state affairs or political matters. All political parties should follow the 1961 Vienna Accord about the conduct of the foreign diplomats.

12. Any elected member of parliament if absent deliberately in parliament session for more than 30 days would loose the membership and previlages along with it. Re election should be held on the same constituency. Repeated violators would not be eligible to particiapte in any state elections for next 15 years.

13. The oppostion members of the parliament should be allowed 55% time in the session. 40% representation in  different parilamenty commitee should be preserved for them as well.

I am sure there could be more suggestions on this regard, which I leave it to the other writers. But I fimrly beleive that, we all love our beloved Bangladesh, and meaningfull discussions among ourselves without prejudice could only improve the socio political conditions of Bangladesh.

Sincerely

Musfique.

1. First ban all politicians to run for any public Office(Who received Halua Rutir Bhagabhagi) who were previously represented as M.P. Upozila Chairman, Union Council Chairman and Members. Chowkidar's will be exception.

2. A Politician cannot run for second term as Prime Minister. Previous Prime Ministers/Presidents won't be allowed to run for any public office.
3. Minimum educational qulaification  for running for Parlimentery seats will be University Gratuation. No exception at all.

[vinnomot] Fw: Action: Dr. Sami Al-Arian Put in Solitary Confinement

CAIR Action Alert #538
Dr. Sami Al-Arian Put in Solitary Confinement

(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/14/08) - CAIR is calling on American Muslims and other people of conscience to write letters in support of Dr. Sami Al-Arian, a former Florida professor currently on his second hunger strike in federal detention to protest alleged unjust treatment by U.S. authorities.

Al-Arian, who has already lost almost more than 30 pounds, began refusing food and water on March 3rd to protest a third attempt by prosecutors to compel his testimony in court. According to the Tampa Bay Coalition for Justice and Peace, he was recently placed in solitary confinement, allegedly with no medical monitoring, in a Maryland detention facility.

SEE ALSO: USA vs. Al-Arian (WUNC)

Al-Arian began his first hunger strike last year after being given a sentence of up to 18 months for refusing to testify before a grand jury in Virginia. His attorneys say an earlier plea agreement freed him from further cooperation with the government. Supporters also say the government's actions amount to a form of harassment.

In December of last year, CAIR welcomed a judge's decision to lift civil contempt charges against Al-Arian. The charges were dropped when the grand jury he was subpoenaed to testify before expired.

In 2005, a Florida jury rejected federal charges that Al-Arian operated a cell for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Al-Arian later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was scheduled for release and deportation in April.

SEE: No Guilty Verdicts in Al-Arian Trial (Tampa Tribune)

At the time of his first hunger strike, a national coalition of major American Muslim organizations said the prison sentence given to Al-Arian amounted to unconstitutional "double jeopardy."

A recent documentary film, "USA vs. Al-Arian," offers a family portrait that documents the Al-Arian family's desperate attempt to fight terrorism charges leveled by the U.S. government.

ACTION REQUESTED: (As always, be POLITE and RESPECTFUL.)

CAIR is asking that letters urging Al-Arian's release be sent to Judge Gerald Lee of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, to Attorney General Michael Mukasey and to congressional leaders.

Supporters are also being asked to write letters directly to Al-Arian.

[vinnomot] Obama crushing Hilary on web [a survey report]

I
n the Race for Online Eyes, Obama Crushing ClintonIn the Race for Online Eyes Obama Crushing Clinton
We've discussed the presidential candidates and their different Web strategies, and came to the conclusion that -- at least on the Democratic side of the race -- Barack Obama had a leg up on his opponents. Well, if you questioned our judgment, then here is numerical proof.

Compete, a Web analytics firm, posted an article to its blog today revealing that when it comes to online voter share, Obama is crushing Hillary Clinton. Just look at the chart above: In overall Face Time (a composite measure of online interactions with a candidate, including MySpace page views, visits to campaign sites, YouTube views, etc.), Obama has Clinton beat by a 4:1 margin. Based on the strength of his speech on race relations, Obama's dominance on YouTube was particularly striking, racking up 539,000 hours of viewing time, roughly ten times as much as Hillary's 53,100 hours.

Unfortunately for Obama, votes aren't cast by the Web savvy alone, and, as we've learned, Ms. Clinton doesn't seem to care about things like mathematical impossibilities.

[vinnomot] Holy Koran for sale : Price $10 Million

---------- Forwarded Message ----------

The sultan, his bride, the $10m relic and an unholy legal battle

THREE Sydney investors have launched legal action against one of the world's richest men, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, claiming he refused to pay for a wedding present for his second bride.

The court action now involves the Australian Government, which is required to serve orders on the sultan or his diplomatic representatives in Canberra.

The gift from the sultan to his 26-year-old Malaysian television hostess bride was a 400-year-old Islamic treasure - a miniature handwritten Koran encased in a bejewelled box, which can fit into the palm of a hand.

Valued at more than $10 million, the religious icon is the property of Garsec, a Sydney-registered company whose directors are David Rahme, Michael McGurk and Hugh Millikin.

Adding to the exotic nature of the tale, the men bought the Koran from a former KGB colonel, Inal Kochiev, who told them the Ottoman Empire relic had been in his family's possession for more than 100 years.

Professor Ahmad Shboul, chairman of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Sydney University, has authenticated the exquisitely made piece, saying: "This is a rare copy of the Koran of exceptional characteristics."

It was probably written in the 16th or 17th centuries, he said, and its tiny size probably meant it was kept "as a sacred object of blessing rather than a text to be read on a regular basis".

Mr Rahme told The Sun-Herald a sale was brokered with representatives of the sultan last year and arrangements were made for it to be handed over and the purchase price paid into a Citibank account in Singapore.

He said an agreement to sell the antique for $US8 million ($10.6 million) was completed in April 2005 with the sultan's godson, Sunny Chai, after cloak-and-dagger meetings in palaces and luxury hotels in the oil-rich kingdom.

They were told the sultan, a Sandhurst graduate who celebrated his 60th birthday last weekend, intended presenting the Koranic manuscript to his new wife, Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim, whom he married in Kuala Lumpur last August at a closely-guarded private ceremony.

But the deal went pear-shaped at the 11th hour, and the sultan's courtiers have been uncontactable since, meaning letters and court documents have not been able to be served.

Mr Rahme and his colleagues have made more than a dozen trips to Brunei in the past year attempting to finalise the deal.

"We had no choice but to seek legal redress," he said.

He said the syndicate had spent more than $400,000 on overseas trips, accommodation and legal expenses and now wanted to "have our day in court".

Under the proposed sale, the purchase price would be shared between Garsec directors and an Islamic charity for children in south-western Sydney.

"If we win our damages action against the sultan, we will either give the box to the sultan or donate it to the Lakemba mosque," Mr Rahme said.

"We are only interested in getting our money back plus our expenses. After that, we'd prefer to see it in a Sydney mosque where it can be appreciated."

[vinnomot] Use and Abuse of Democracy

Bangladesh and the United States of America are likely to go to polls at the end of this year. In the USA voters might be in the mood to try something historic. It is hard to remember a time when a black American has been in such a prime political position. Barack Obama is the first black American candidate to have serious chance of winning the presidency. Unsurprisingly, in Bangladesh we are perhaps going to witness business usual once again. A majority of our politicians from both the major parties are considered loyal sycophants. Perhaps they are waiting in the forlorn hope that their leaders will be released from prison soon and make the politics of Bangladesh business as usual. Their excessive optimism and naive idealism suggest that they are still in love with the past politics. They are interested for next election only, but not for next generation.

Silent majority reckon that our politicians' culture of corruption mainly imprison vast majority of our people into poverty. Our maverick politicians preach moral and democratic values; constantly speak for greater rights for ethnic and religious minorities. They also speak about protecting human rights, reducing corruption and increasing the quality of governance, yet they practice antithesis of these values. In public speeches, they call on the people to practice benevolence, justice and brotherhood, yet they routinely violate these ideals themselves. Political parties are unused to the idea of sharing power and working together.

On the other hand, the present caretaker government may not be running out of ideas, but surely running out of time. Despite public dissatisfaction over the economy, the administration's approval rating has not fallen significantly as yet. Ordinary people sincerely believe that this government has made a firm decision to tackle the country's massive graft and sleaze problems. Some shrewd politicians try to convince the electorates that this regime is living on borrowed time. It should not indulge in abstract principles and high-minded long-term projects in the face of public's growing impatience with inflationary price spiral. Man in the street demands easy answers and immediate results.

It is rather difficult to explain politically to the people that these policies are very carefully designed for the country's best long-term interest. Across Bangladesh prices are rising fast as domestic output fails to keep pace with surging demand. Naturally, we can distinctly hear the buzz today about discontent about social gloom and political drift, a crisis of faith in the future. I wonder whether mass people will be able to stand up to the crueler economic conditions if crop fails once again. Such hopelessness may drive ordinary people to desperation. The paradox is that, although people sense a lack of choice in politics, yet most political activists are not in a mood to dump the political misnomers into wilderness.

Conventional wisdom now is that, there will be an election in accordance with government's planned road map and at the same time, caretaker administration will make necessary political reforms to change the political complexion of the country. Hopefully, political parties will see sense and bring new brand of politicians into the political mainstream. Only goal-oriented politicians with governing skills and high ethical standards can resist corruption and make necessary concession to political reality.

We need to face up to the fact that in our country, democracy never worked very well. Most of our elections have been followed by governmental paralysis and massive corruption. Does anyone sincerely believe that forthcoming polls will change the essential reality in country's politics, such as corruption and bad governance? Good governance is far more important to Bangladesh's development than the issue of more democracy.

The basic problem confronting this country is not a shortage of democracy but an absence of good governance. Most economic commentators say that fast growth is essential to pull millions of people out of poverty. As we all know, that open market, better education and investment in infrastructures are the three chief ingredients of East Asia's success. Most of the South East Asian nations staked their country's political and social stability on export led job creation, by taking unique advantage of the vast pool of cheap labour. Countries like China, India, Vietnam and Thailand have experienced a significant degree of industrialisation, urbanisation and social transformation in comparison with Bangladesh. Bangladesh's demographic structure is rather beginning to look like that in East Asia.

Population growth by itself does not add to prosperity, unless young people are educated and new jobs are created. Most of our children in rural areas either lack basic education or are educationally disadvantaged. Approximately half of our women are illiterate. Now it is time to tackle the public sector. Infrastructures, such as roads and electricity and public services, such as education and potable water, are woefully inadequate and limit our growth. India's economy has grown by an impressive 9.2 per cent and policy makers think, at some point, India's growth rate could even outpace China's 10.4 per cent. Apparently under the leadership of prime minister Manmohan Singh, India has broken free of its bureaucratic cage and its inventive private sector is shining bright. Tata Steel, Infosys and Wipro are storming global markets.

On the contrary, in our country most of the big private companies are either heavily in debt or are defaulting borrowers and state owned industries have become expensive white elephants. Most political analysts still tussle over how to interpret the period, especially the last two decades, where our political leaders were misguided and blinded by the desire to preserve their power when they should have been building industry and infrastructure as others in South East Asia were doing.

However, it is our cherished hope that now our fractious politicians will be willing to make the necessary concession needed to achieve national reconciliation and help ensure smooth transition to democracy. Evidently, in many Third World countries often criminals become legislators and criminal politicians take power democratically, but the advantage of democracy is that people can get rid of a corrupt and inefficient regime, after a certain period of time. We should not push the country further away from liberal democratic future.

Anam A Choudhury is a former investment banker.

We suppport his thoughts and ideas and firmly belief that a change is higly needed for better Bangladesh.
