I wonder as to why our newspapers highlight the
irresponsible utterances of insignificant foreign
diplomats. By making such irresponsible statements
they are violating the geneva conventon. Why does our
media do not mention that. I wonder if our journalists
are working for our country or not? If not then why
should we buy those rubbish from the news stand and
read? Can any one give me one good reason.

[vinnomot] Mohiuddin Anwar is suggesting this article from Arab News

Hello,

Please post this important story. Thanks.
Mohiuddin Anwar is suggesting the following article from http://www.arabnews.com:

Delhi Snubs Washington Over Iran
Nilofar Suhrawardy, Arab News

NEW DELHI, 24 April 2008 - India has tartly dismissed American advice that it press Iran to give up its nuclear program, saying it does not need "any guidance on the future conduct" of its foreign relations.

The left bloc voiced its opposition to a US statement asking India to tell Iran to "meet requirements of the UN Security Council" concerning its nuclear program during Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit next week.

In the Lok Sabha, legislator Rupchand Pal (Communist Party of India-Marxist) described the US statement as "audacious and arrogant." It amounted to an "infringement on India's sovereign position," Pal said during the Zero Hour. With the US "pressurizing India on how it should conduct its bilateral relations with Iran, the government should make a statement in Parliament denouncing the (US) statement," Pal said. The Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman had "rightly rebuffed" the American suggestion, Pal said.

India is negotiating a proposed $7 billion gas pipeline with Iran, and the project is expected to top discussions when President Ahmadinejad makes his first visit to the South Asian country next Tuesday. The United States strongly opposes the pipeline from Iran and accuses Tehran of running a clandestine nuclear weapons program and arming Iraqi militants. Iran says its nuclear program is only for peaceful energy purposes.

US Deputy State Department spokesman Tom Casey told reporters Monday in Washington that New Delhi should press Ahmadinejad to end Iran's alleged nuclear program and aid to Iraqi militants. He also said India should tell the Iranian leader to stop supporting groups in the Middle East, such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

India made clear Tuesday that it would make its own decisions.

"India and Iran are ancient civilizations whose relations span centuries," the Foreign Ministry said in statement.

"Both nations are perfectly capable of managing all aspects of their relationship with the appropriate degree of care and attention," it continued. "Neither country needs any guidance on the future conduct of bilateral relations." New Delhi and Washington are trying to finalize a landmark nuclear energy cooperation deal that has faced stiff opposition in India from communist political parties, which argue the pact would give the United States too much influence over Indian foreign policy.

The critics often cite a non-binding US law that would require the American president to determine if New Delhi was cooperating with efforts to shut down Iran's atomic program.

While India-US nuclear cooperation would continue no matter what the president determined, the critics say the law is an attempt to dictate New Delhi's foreign policy.

Three Militant Commanders Killed

Indian security forces shot dead three top commanders of the main militant group fighting to merge Indian Kashmir with Pakistan, police said yesterday.

Two of the militants were killed in a gunbattle while the third was shot dead in a separate incident nearby, they said.

"The (two) militants were killed in a fierce gunbattle with police and soldiers in Khawaja Bagh" north of the summer capital Srinagar, senior superintendent of police Anand Jain told AFP.

The fighting erupted early yesterday and carried on for several hours until police and soldiers raided a house where the rebels were hiding, Jain said. Two civilians were also wounded.

Both of the dead militants, district commander Tanveer Ahmed Zargar and his deputy Imtiyaz Khan, belonged to Hizbul Mujahedeen, Jain said.

Re: [notun_bangladesh] Re: [vinnomot] AWL Hunger Strike will help to increase rice deposit in Bangladesh

Mithu Bhai

Are you serius or joking or making fun out of the clowns called "Jonogon Premiks". Do you think they remaine unfed oh no, not at all. They will fed full plates of Kachchi from home and while performing the drama of "Anoshon" you will see that they havinbg  intermittent Berps to ooze out the gas created from Kachchi. Say for example if they go 48 hours Hs they will clandestinly eat in the loo(in the past some incidents happened like this.

This is nothing but mockery with the sufferings millions. The tragedy is that it is these goons politicians who looted rampantly(BAL/BNP/JP) and made the govt. exchequer empty.

We ,the fools,( jonogon) must hoot these dramatists out from the field and stop these nuisance forever.

Sometimes we think that all bad news are bad, but I differ that idea.  One of the example will be "Hunger strike" by the AWL hardcore party people which will help to increase rice deposit in Bangladesh indirectly.  More often they do hunger strike, another people will be saved from excess of rice due to the hunger strike of hardcore AWL party people in Bangladesh.

I like to urge them to perform more hunger strike often which may help Bangladesh indirectly.  This may not sound right but if you think in cool head then this will make sense to help Bangladesh in the time of rice crises.

Please support their hunger strike in future and urge them to perform hunger strike more often.  Please do not discourage them from this noble effort to help Bangladesh hungry people.  We should support any political party who will do good for Bangladesh.

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -----
The Awami League will observe a countrywide six-hour token hunger strike on April 29 to press its various demands including release of the party president Sheikh Hasina.

The party presidium at a meeting on Wednesday night fixed the date for the hunger strike âۉ€œ its first major protest programme since the military-controlled interim government assumed office in January, 2007.

The AL central working committee at a meeting on March 29 announced the decision to observe a countrywide mass hunger strike in mid-April demanding immediate release of Sheikh Hasina, steps to contain the spiralling prices of essential commodities and a date for the general elections.

Ãƒ¢Ã¢‚¬Ã‹œWe have decided to observe a six-hour token hunger strike across the country on April 29âۉ„¢, the acting general secretary of AL, Syed Ashraful Islam, told reporters after the presidium meeting held at the Gulshan residence of the acting party president Zillur Rahman.

He said that the programme was designed considering the state of emergency and the party would not violate the emergency rule.

Ãƒ¢Ã¢‚¬Ã‹œWe will observe hunger strike at the partyâۉ„¢s Bangabandhu Avenue office, party chiefâۉ„¢s Dhanmondi office and all the 22 thana unit offices in the capitalâۉ„¢, Ashraf said, adding that the party leaders and activists outside the capital would observe the programme at places they would be staying from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm as indoor politics was not yet allowed there.

He said that the hunger strike was originally planned for mid-April as the leaders had hoped the emergency would be withdrawn by April 14. The programme has been delayed by a few days considering the present circumstances.

The meeting also discussed Mondayâۉ„¢s decision of eight front organisations of the party on waging a vigorous movement without waiting for the main partyâۉ„¢s nod to press for Hasinaâۉ„¢s release.

The AL presidium decided that the party would not interfere with their [front organisations] decision, meeting sources said.

The party leaders said that the AL should not take the responsibility of street movement at the moment and if the front organisations wanted to go for such programmes they could do it on their own.

Ãƒ¢Ã¢‚¬Ã‹œWe have discussed the decision of the front organisations and concluded that they [front organisations] should be allowed to go by their own constitutions â€Â¦ we have no authority to interveneâۉ„¢, presidium member Abdur Razzak told New Age after the meeting.

Another presidium member Matia Chowdhury said that the party had renewed its call for immediate release of Sheikh Hasina and unanimously decided to observe hunger strike to press the demand.

The meeting strongly criticised the Election Commission for its interference in the affairs of political parties and hoped that the commission would stop doing so.

Ãƒ¢Ã¢‚¬Ã‹œIt is not the duty of the Election Commission to interfere in the activities of political parties. We hope it will not try to interfere in [the affairs of] Awami Leagueâۉ„¢, Ashraf said, replying to a query on the ECâۉ„¢s role in the BNPâۉ„¢s unity move.

He also accused the EC of delaying implementation of the election roadmap and said that the commission was already three months behind the roadmap.
The meeting demanded holding of parliamentary elections before any polls and urged the government not to make the judicial process controversial by issuing threat to the lawyers of Sheikh Hasina.

Terming the threat to a lawyer of Hasina unfortunate, Ashraf said that the government should not make the trial process controversial by such interference.

He said, â€ËœThe AL wants to participate in the proposed dialogue with the government taking Sheikh Hasina with us, but has not yet made any decision that it will not attend the dialogue without Hasina.âۉ„¢

Replying to another query, Ashraf said that diplomats of foreign missions should not interfere in the internal politics of Bangladesh.

Ãƒ¢Ã¢‚¬Ã‹œThey should maintain diplomatic norms and refrain from making comments on the countryâۉ„¢s internal issuesâۉ„¢, Ashraf said about frequent comments of some envoys.

[vinnomot] [BDBusiness] Bangladesh urged to manufacture cancer medicines

Subject: [BDBusiness] Bangladesh urged to manufacture cancer medicines
To: bdbusiness@yahoogroups.com
Date: Thursday, April 24, 2008, 11:37 AM

Bangladesh is likely to go for manufacturing cancer medicines for the poor countries, including SAARC nations, to provide cost-effective and affordable treatments to the patients, reports BSS.

This was focused at a 4-day International Socio-Scientific Cancer Conference (ISSCC) for SAARC Region held in Dhaka recently under the joint auspices of the Oncology Club and the Federation of Anti-Cancer Activities of Bangladesh (FACAB).

While talking to BSS Wednesday on the outcome of the deliberations at the international event, chairman of the Oncology Club and Professor of Vrije University in Amsterdam Professor ABMF Karim said the country might be benefited on a few fronts from this conference in stepping in cancer treatments with particular emphasis on cost-effectiveness.
Elaborating the medicine manufacturing endeavors, Prof. Karim said Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, while inaugurating the ISSCC as the chief guest, floated a concept of Social Business in the presence of Health Adviser Dr A M M Shawkat Ali and Health Secretary A K M Zafarullah Khan.

This excellent innovative idea would carry us a long way in producing low-cost cancer medicines, Prof. Karim said.

"We shall work further on the concept and hope we could manufacture cancer drugs that would not only meet the requirement of Bangladesh, but also supply those to the poor countries including the SAARC nations," he said.

On the sidelines of the ISSCC, the organizers also arranged 10 workshops at the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH), Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRBEM).
