চার প্রবীণ সাংবাদিক কে জি মুস্তফা, এবিএম মূসা, নির্মল সেন ও কামাল লোহানী এক বিবৃতিতে সা¤প্রতিককালে সব ধরনের গণমাধ্যমের উপর প্রকাশ্য ও অপ্রকাশ্য নিয়ন্ত্রণ আরোপ এবং সংবাদপত্র ও টেলিভিশনে কর্মরত সাংবাদিক এবং মফস্বল সংবাদদাতাদের হয়রানি ও হুমকি প্রদানে উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছেন। তারা বর্তমান ক্ষমতাসীন সরকারকে সকল সংবাদ, মন্তব্য, প্রতিবেদন প্রকাশ ও স¤প্রচার জরুরি আইনের বিধি-নিষেধের আওতামুক্ত করার দাবি জানিয়েছেন। এই সকল বিধি-নিষেধ প্রত্যাহার ও হয়রানি বন্ধের দাবিতে সাংবাদিক সমাজ ও তাদের নেতৃবৃন্দকে শুধু মৌখিকভাবে সোচ্চার হওয়া নয়, সংগ্রামী ও সক্রিয় ভূমিকা নেয়ার আহ্বান জানান।
প্রসঙ্গত চার সাংবাদিক বলেন, 'একই সঙ্গে আমরা দেশের রাজনৈতিক নেতৃবৃন্দকে স্মরণ করিয়ে দিতে চাই, অতীতে গণতন্ত্র পুনরুদ্ধার, মানবাধিকার রক্ষা ও মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য বিভিন্ন সময় বিভিন্ন আন্দোলনে আমরা এক কাতারে শামিল হয়েছিলাম। অথচ আজকে তারা গণমাধ্যম ও সাংবাদিকদের দুর্দিনে একাত্মতা প্রকাশের ব্যাপারে নিশ্চুপ রয়েছেন। তাদের যারা একটি রাজনৈতিক সংলাপে অংশ নিচ্ছেন তাদের সাংবাদিকতার ও মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতা ও সাংবাদিক হয়রানির বিষয়টি সেখানেই আলোচনা করার অনুরোধ জানাচ্ছি। অপরদিকে অপ্রীতিকর পরিস্থিতির শিকার সাংবাদিকদের আমাদের কাছে তাদের সকল তিক্ত অভিজ্ঞতার বিস্তারিত বিবরণ পাঠাতে বলছি।
চার প্রবীণ সাংবাদিক গত শুক্রবার জাতীয় প্রেসক্লাবে একটি বৈঠকে 'স্বাধীন গণমাধ্যমের জন্য আমরা চারজন' (ডব ঋড়ঁৎ ভড়ৎ ঋৎবব গবফরধ) নামে একটি ফোরাম গঠন করেন। বৈঠক শেষে সাংবাদিক চতুষ্টয় বলেন, 'ইতিমধ্যে আমাদের কাছে অনেক জাতীয় এবং আঞ্চলিক পত্রিকার সম্পাদক ও সাংবাদিক এবং টিভি সাংবাদিক ও মফস্বল সংবাদদাতারা সংবাদ প্রকাশ, প্রচার, প্রেরণ ও স¤প্রচারের ক্ষেত্রে কোন কোন মহল কর্তৃক হয়রানির দুঃসহ অভিজ্ঞতা চিঠি, টেলিফোন ও ই-মেইলের মাধ্যমে অবহিত করেছেন। সংবাদপত্র ও টিভি আলোচক এবং কলাম লেখকদের একটি অলিখিত কালো তালিকা তাদের জানিয়ে দেয়া হয়েছে বলে অভিযোগ করেছেন। এমতাবস্থায় অতীত দিনের মতো বর্তমান সঙ্কটময় পরিস্থিতি মোকাবিলার জন্য অগ্রণী ভূমিকা পালনের জন্য নিগৃহীত সাংবাদিকগণ আমাদের অনুরোধ জানিয়েছেন। তাদের এই অনুরোধের প্রেক্ষিতে আমরা বর্তমান সাংবাদিক নেতৃবৃন্দের ও সম্পাদকদের সঙ্গে আলোচনা করে অচিরেই স্বাধীন গণমাধ্যম আন্দোলনের কার্যকর কার্যসূচি ঘোষণা করবো।' বিজ্ঞপ্তি

চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরে আয়োজিত সংবাদ সম্মেলনে আমেরিকান রাষ্ট্রদূত জেমস মরিয়ার্টি Ñযাযাদিযুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নবনিযুক্ত রাষ্ট্রদূত জেমস এফ মরিয়ার্টি বলেন, দুর্নীতি ও সন্ত্রাসবাদ বাংলাদেশের অন্যতম প্রধান সমস্যা। এর বিরুদ্ধে অভিযানে সাধারণ মানুষের সমর্থন একটি জরুরি বিষয়। সাংবাদিকরাও এক্ষেত্রে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করতে পারেন। সন্ত্রাসের বিরুদ্ধে লড়াইয়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও বাংলাদেশের মধ্যে দৃঢ় সম্পর্ক রয়েছে। এ সহযোগিতা আমরা আরো বাড়াতে চাই। এ জন্য আমরা সিভিল সোসাইটির সঙ্গেও একযোগে কাজ করতে আগ্রহী। তিনি দুর্নীতি ও সন্ত্রাসের বিরুদ্ধে তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের বিভিন্ন অভিযানের প্রশংসা করেন।
গতকাল সকালে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের চার নম্বর জেটিতে আয়োজিত সংবাদ সম্মেলনে সাংবাদিকদের এক প্রশ্নের উত্তরে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন। এর আগে নগরীর আমবাগান বস্তিতে আয়োজিত অনুষ্ঠানে সাংবাদিকদের প্রশ্নের উত্তরে তিনি বলেন, আমাকে নিশ্চিত করা হয়েছে আগামী ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে সব রাজনৈতিক দলের অংশগ্রহণে একটি অবাধ, সুষ্ঠু, স্বচ্ছ ও বিশ্বাসযোগ্য নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হবে। এ ধরনের একটি নির্বাচন বাংলাদেশের জনগণ, রাজনৈতিক দল ও তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের প্রত্যাশা।
অন্য এক প্রশ্নের জবাবে তিনি বলেন, শক্তিশালী গণতন্ত্র, টেকসই উন্নয়ন ও সন্ত্রাসবাদকে প্রত্যাখ্যানের শর্তে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সরকার বাংলাদেশকে খাদ্য সহায়তা দিচ্ছে। তবে এই ফুড এইড বিজনেস (খাদ্য সহায়তা কার্যক্রম) থেকে বের হয়ে আসাই আমাদের চূড়ান্ত লক্ষ্য। আমরা আশা করি, বাংলাদেশের মানুষ নিজেদের চেষ্টায় খাদ্যে স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণতা অর্জন করবে। আমরা এ লক্ষ্য পূরণে বাংলাদেশকে সহায়তা করতে চাই।
তিনি বলেন, সরকারের সঙ্গে রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর সংলাপে কোনো বহিরাগত মধ্যস্থতাকারীর প্রয়োজন নেই। এক্ষেত্রে তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের ভূমিকাই যথেষ্ট। তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকার সব রাজনৈতিক দলের অংশগ্রহণের মাধ্যমে সফল সংলাপ আয়োজনের চেষ্টা করছে। আমরা এ প্রক্রিয়াকে সমর্থন করি। আমরা দেখতে চাই, সমঝোতায় উপনীত হওয়ার জন্য সংশ্লিষ্ট সব পক্ষ প্রয়োজনীয় ত্যাগ স্বীকার করবেন। এ প্রক্রিয়ায় আমরা বহিরাগত কোনো পক্ষের ভূমিকার প্রয়োজন দেখি না।
বাংলাদেশে আসন্ন নির্বাচন নিয়ে আপনার প্রত্যাশা কিÑ এ প্রশ্নের উত্তরে জেমস এফ মরিয়ার্টি বলেন, আমরা দেখেছি বাংলাদেশের নির্বাচন কমিশন এ ব্যাপারে বেশ ভালো প্রস্তুতি নিয়েছে। পৃথিবীর অন্যতম বৃহৎ একটি ভোটার তালিকা তৈরির বেশিরভাগ কাজই তারা সাফল্যের সঙ্গে সম্পন্ন করছেন। আমি আশাবাদী, বিশ্বাসযোগ্য নির্বাচন আয়োজনের ব্যাপারেও তারা সাফল্যের পরিচয় দেবে।
চট্টগ্রামে বেসরকারি কনটেইনার বন্দর স্থাপনের ব্যাপারে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের পরিকল্পনার কথা দৃঢ়তার সঙ্গে নাকচ করে দিয়ে রাষ্ট্রদূত বলেন, সেবার মান বাড়ানোর ক্ষেত্রে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর ব্যাপক অগ্রগতি অর্জন করেছে। এটি তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের একটি বড় সাফল্য। চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরে জাহাজের গড় অবস্থান সময় ১২ দিনের জায়গায় মাত্র আড়াই দিন হয়েছে। বিদেশি বিনিয়োগকারীরা আস্থা ফিরে পাচ্ছেন। শিপিং ব্যবসাও নির্ভরযোগ্যতা পাচ্ছে।
জেমস এফ মরিয়ার্টি ও তার স্ত্রী মাদাম মরিয়ার্টি তিনদিনের সফরে গত শনিবার চট্টগ্রাম আসেন। গতকাল সকালে তিনি নগরীর আমবাগান বস্তিতে অন্তঃসত্ত্বা ও দুগ্ধদানকারী ৯৫ দরিদ্র নারীর মধ্যে মাথাপিছু ১২ কেজি গম, দেড় লিটার ভোজ্যতেল ও ৫০০ গ্রাম করে ডাল বিতরণ করেন। বাংলাদেশে ইউএসএইডের পরিচালনায় সৌহার্দ কর্মসূচির আওতায় এসব খাদ্য বিতরণ করা হয়। বর্তমানে দেশের ১৪ জেলার ১৩৭টি বস্তির ২০ হাজার পরিবারকে এ কর্মসূচির আওতায় খাদ্য সহায়তা দেয়া হচ্ছে।
যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের রাষ্ট্রদূত সকাল ১০টায় চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর পরিদর্শনে আসেন। এ সময় তাকে স্বাগত জানান বন্দর চেয়ারম্যান কমোডর এম ফারুক। রাষ্ট্রদূত বন্দরের চার নম্বর জেটিতে অবস্থানকারী একটি লাইটারেজ জাহাজ থেকে গম খালাসের কাজ প্রত্যক্ষ করেন। এসব গম বাংলাদেশে ইউএসএইড পরিচালিত সৌহার্দ কর্মসূচির জন্য যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সরকারের খাদ্য সহায়তা হিসেবে পাঠানো হয়েছে। ২২ মে ৪৫ হাজার ৭০০ মেট্রিক টন গম নিয়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের লিবার্টি ঈগল নামে একটি জাহাজ চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের বহির্নোঙরে আসে।
জেমস এফ মরিয়ার্টি আজ সকালে নগরীর বাদশা মিয়া রোডে কমনওয়েলথ যুদ্ধ সমাধি পরিদর্শন করবেন। দুপুরে তিনি চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর চেয়ারম্যান কমোডর এম ফারুক ও ইপিজেড ইনভেস্টরস ফোরামের সদস্যদের সঙ্গে মতবিনিময় করবেন।

Janakantha revolutionized Bangladesh Print Media. Janakantha is the news
paper which did not submit to the Islamic fundamentalists & political
Islamists, and did not compromise its journalistic ethics and standards for
the Nizami-khaleda gov't advertisement money. For these two crimes! who else
but the editor of Janakantha will be in jail?
Mr. Atiquallah Masud was target of the Islamists, viz. by Jamaat/ BNP a long
time ago. When the care taker government came to power Jamaat with its
sympathizers was able to get him. He is the poor victim of the growing
militancy in Bangladesh. He is in jail and will be in jail for 48 long years
if the Islamists have their way as the prevailing situation in Bangladesh
suggests, unless the war criminals are tried and put away for good, and the
progressive forces return to power.
On 9th May in Washington, D.C. in a Congressional Human Rights Caucus
Symposium in Rayburn building, Mr. Selig Harrison, director of the Asia
Program at the Center for International Policy and a senior scholar of the
Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, told point blank that, it
was almost certain that AL was coming to power and to stop that from
happening this drama of 1/11 was played as programmed. After BNP/Jamaat left
power, all the episodes played was aimed at preventing Awami League from
coming to power and the charade continues to date. Editor Atiqullah Masud is
also a victim of that evil scheme. Sheikh Hasina is in jail for the same
reason. The main game plot is to 'Stop Awami League' by any and all means.
They forget that Pakistan tried to stop AL and Bangladesh emerged as a free
country. I don't know what fate will ordain for those heinous Islamists, but
I am sure militant Islamists are bound to be doomed in Bangladesh. In the
same Washington event, I was invited as a speaker. During the Q&A session,
someone asked a question about Jamaat and my answer was: US administration
policy towards Jamaat is not a reflection of the popular sentiment in the US
nor that of In Bangladesh. In fact Jamaat is the party which gives shelter
to all Islamic terrorists. State department acting director Mr. Richard
Sacks also spoke there and was present during the Q&A.
Two years or so ago, few Bangladeshi editors were invited to the US State
Department, when I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Atiqullah Masud. We
met him mainly to 'Thank Him' for his unassailable service rendered for the
safety and welfare of the religious minorities of Bangladesh during
BNP/Jamaat rule, especially, during the dark days in the aftermath of 2001
election when the Islamic goons celebrated their victory by killing, raping,
looting and persecuting the religious minorities of Bangladesh. This
honorable man, a true patriot who left the comfort and the luxury of richess
and joined the war against Pakistand for our freedom is jailed today for his
unbowed stance for our freedom and justice and against dark pulses
discrimination and Islamic fanaticism. Inspite of government's
ruthless incarceration of him, the sacrifice Mr. Atiqullah Masud had made
has already earned him the distinction of People's Editor. We salute him and
I am sure minorities and progressive forces are saluting him as well. At
this time, I must take the opportunity to say, 'Thank You' to all Janakantha
journalists including respected Toyab Khan & Borhan Bhai.
The question, when Mr. Masud will be freed, looms large today. We can't
envisage a scenario of his freedom under this government. But it can
certainly be predicted that his incarceration will end when Sheikh Hasina is
free. I am sure there is no jail in Bangladesh which can confine her for too
long. Clock is ticking; she will be free along with all the progressive
forces. For Khaleda Zia, I am sorry, she should be tried for 'Crime against
Humanity' and surely, I want an open, free & fair trial.
The tide is turning. On May 18, the Chief Advisor opined in his speech "new
dawn of the new year will welcome a democratically elected new gov't in
Bangladesh". It is not far-fetched that the new dawn of the new year will
also write a new script for all the actors who played in the 1/11 drama.
Until that--let's keep our fingers crossed.

It is time to unite the nation in the name of
Bangladeshi nationalism, not that it should be under
the leadership of Begum Khaleda. Main reason of her
capturing power was that her opponents were
anti-Bangladeshi- nationalism. Her associates misused
the chances, for which she cannot avoid the blame of
misrule and lack of transparency.
However, there is no time to waste any more. If the
nation fails to plant a better leadership, the country
will fail to cement its foundation to command over
nationalism in the long run. If Bangladeshi
nationalism looses its root, some cynical leaders
would capture the ground and destabilize the country.
At this moment duty of people oriented leaders would
be to become sincere and unite with one slogan –
Bangladeshi nationalism. Selection of leadership would
be on the basis of consensus. If they run after power
ignoring interest of the country they would never be
able to capture power, rather would be culminated
soon. A concrete thought should work quickly.
