[vinnomot] Man’s Vicegerency-Khilafah & Stewardship & (Trust-Amana )

In the name of Allah most gracious most merciful
Assalaamu alykum wa rahmatuallahi wa barakatuhu,

Man's Vicegerency-Khilafah and Stewardship and (Trust-Amana )
Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) constitutes the ideological foundation of Islam, the concept of man's Khilafah (vicegerency/caliphate) provides the operational framework for the Islamic scheme of life. Adam alai salaam learned about knowledge. Adam alai salaam realized that Iblis was the symbol of evil in the universe and that the angels were the symbol of good. However he did not yet know anything about himself. Then Allah made him perceive his true identity and the reason for his creation, and the secret of his glorification.
Allah the Exalted said: He taught Adam all the names of everything. (Ch 2:31 Quran).

His knowledge included knowledge of the Creator the deen-al-Islam, as well as the knowledge he would need to inhabit and master the earth. All kinds of worldly knowledge which are included in this. Allah declared His intention to send a vicegerent (khalifah) to the earth. Adam alai salaam was destined to play this role of vicegerency and was endowed with the 'knowledge of the things' to do the job well.

Then both Adam alai salaam and Hawwa alai salaam were put to a test and were asked not to approach a certain tree. They fell victim to the evil persuasions of Satan and committed sin. But immediately after sinning they repented their mistakes, sought Allah's forgiveness and were forgiven. It was after they were forgiven and redeemed that they were sent down to the earth to play their role as vicegerents of Allah. They were promised Divine Guidance and were assured that those who followed that guidance would be successful. Adam was the first man to receive this guidance and convey it to his progeny.
The role and status of vicegerency is conferred upon the human being as such, and it is shared by man and woman alike but their roles differ. This lays the foundations of their essential equality as human beings, as vicegerents of Allah on the earth, whatever their different roles in society may be.

According to the Qur'an "Satan caused them both to deflect therefrom". Both were held responsible for the act, both repented their transgression and both were forgiven. They entered the world without any stigma of original sin on their soul. Human nature is pure and good. Man has been created in the best of all forms. [Q 95:4] Man and woman are made from the same substance. Every one is born in a state of purity and innocence. Success or failure depends entirely on one's own beliefs and behavior. [Q 95:5-6; 103:2-3] No one is to be responsible for the shortcomings of others. [Q 6:195]

6.162 Say: "Truly my prayer and my service of sacrifice my life and my death are (all) for Allah the Cherisher of the Worlds:

6.163 No partner hath He: this am I commanded and I am the first of those who bow to His Will.

1. Vicegerency (Khilafah):

The human being, in the Islamic world-view is considered a vicegerent (khalifah). This vicegerency is declared before the creation of the first human being:
"Behold, your Lord said to the angels: 'I will create a vicegerent on earth.' They said: 'Will place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood? While we do celebrate Your praises and glorify Your holy (name)?' He said: 'I know what you know not.'" (Qur'an, 2:30 )
In her/his capacity as a vicegerent, the human being is perceived as the trustee of the earth. She/he is not supposed to cause corruption in any form on earth (i.e. the environment). Life on earth entails great responsibilities. It is a test with accountability. It is followed by either reward or punishment. These meanings are mentioned in the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Vicegerency as a test is found in the following verse:
"It is He Who has made you (His) vicegerents, inheritors of the earth: He has raised you in ranks, some above others: that He may try you in the gifts He has given you: for your Lord is quick in punishment: yet He is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful." (Qur'an, 6:165)
On the other hand, this vicegerency is subjected to observation:
"Then We made you heirs in the land after them, to see how you would behave!" (Qur'an, 10:14 )
The same message is implied in the Hadith [narration] of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him:
"Verily, this world is sweet and appealing, and Allah placed you as vicegerents therein; He will see what you will do. So, be careful of [what you do in] this world and [what you do to/with] women, for the first test of the children of Israel was in women!"Muslim, Sahih.
It is rather clear, now, that the Islamic world-view indicates that vicegerency on earth forms a test which includes how human beings fulfil right and duties for themselves and eachother along with rest of the creation . Is it going to be based upon divine instructions, not based upon personal desires and conjectures that might lead to the destruction of Islamic fabric. If the latter condition prevails, then vicegerency will be entrusted to a different people or generation. This possibility of this kind of switch is understood from the following two verses:
"…Call in remembrance that He made you inheritors after the people of Noah…" (Qur'an, 7:69)

"And remember how He made you inheritors after the `Ad people and gave you habitation in the land…" (Qur'an, 7:74)
The declaration of the institution of khilafah, which Allah [S.W.T] has informed the angels about, was reinforced by the verse that shows that Allah [S.W.T] has taught Adam the 'names' (Asma') of all things:
"And He taught Adam the nature [names] of all things…" (Qur'an, 2:31 )
This discussion leads us to realize that there is an organic connection between proper knowledge and right behavior. Indeed, knowledge becomes a tool that renders humanity morally responsible. Ibn Kathir said in his exegesis, regarding the above verse, the following important statement:
"The right (interpretation) is that He taught him the names of all things: their particulars, attributes and functions."Ibn Kathir, Tafsir; vol. 1, p. 7 ( Beirut Edition).
Therefore, vicegerency is based upon knowledge that enables the human being to be a care taker of self and society along with rest of the creation as much as possible. Humanity should behave in such a way that would maintain the balance in all walks of life.

33. 72 We did indeed offer the Trust to the Heavens and the Earth and the Mountains: but they refused to undertake it being afraid thereof: but man undertook it he was indeed unjust and foolish

2.30 Behold thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a vicegerent on earth." They said "Wilt thou place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood? Whilst we do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said: "I know what ye know not."

27.62 Or who listens to the (soul) distressed when it calls on Him and who relieves its suffering and makes you (mankind) inheritors of the earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Little it is that ye heed!

2. Subjection (Taskhir):

The earth is made available for human use, without abuse or misuse.

17.70 We have honored the sons of Adam; provided them with transport on land and sea; given them for sustenance things good and pure; and conferred on them special favors above a great part of Our Creation.
Therefore, all mentioned verses clearly state that the heavens and the earth, the rivers and the seas, the cattle and animals, and much more are subjected to humanity. In this, we find support and backing for the institution of Khilafah. This will strengthen the human being to fulfill his/her basic role on earth, which is to worship God.
"And He has subjected to you, as from Him, all that is in the heavens and on earth: behold, in that there are Signs indeed for those who reflect." (Qur'an, 45:13)

"Do you not see that God has subjected to your (use) all things in the heavens and on earth. And has made His bounties flow to you in exceeding measure, (both) seen and unseen?" (Qur'an, 31:20)

"He has made subject to you the Night and the Day; the Sun and the Moon; and the Stars are in subjection by His command: verily in this are Signs for people who are wise." (Qur'an, 16:12 )
"And the earth We have spread out; set thereon mountains firm and immovable; and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance." (Qur'an, 15:19 )

3. "Inhabitation" (I`mar):

The Qur'an, moreover, makes it clear that the earth is our habitat and that we are required to dwell on it, work it out and establish a balanced way of life without excesses or deficiencies. To limit the translation of I`mar to inhabitation will not do justice. The meaning includes spreading and settling all over the earth, inhabiting every livable quarters, building …etc. In short, it includes every positive activity that would make life on earth prosperous. If an activity diverts humanity from the right path (i.e. against the Shari `ah), then it cannot be considered as I`mar. The following verse reflects the relationship between creation and the positive role expected from humanity:
"To the Thamud People (We sent) Salih, one of their own brethren. He said: 'O my People! Worship God: you have no other God but Him. It is He Who has produced you from the earth and settled you therein: then ask forgiveness of Him, and turn to Him (in repentance): for my Lord is (always) near, ready to answer.'" (Qur'an, 11:61)
This verse reminds us of the bounty that God has bestowed upon humanity. There is a beautiful connection in the verse between demanding pure monotheism from humanity at large, despite the context which uses the people of Thamud as a medium. Believing in the Oneness of God and the notion of I`mar come hand in hand.
The renowned contemporary Muslim scholar Sayyid Qutb commented on this verse; he said:
"And Salih reminded them (the people of Thamud) about their origination from earth, the creation of every individual from the nutrition of the earth or from its components that make up their bodies. Despite being (created) from this earth and its elements, Allah appointed them vicegerents so that they may inhabit it! He wanted them to be vicegerents as a species, and as individuals to replace those who came before they did!"
Thus it was, but We made the Children of Israel inheritors of such things. ( ÓæÑÉ ÇáÔÚÑÇÁ , Ash-Shuara, Chapter #26, Verse #60)

He it is That has made you inheritors in the earth: if, then, any do reject ((Allah)), their rejection (works) against themselves: their rejection but adds to the odium for the Unbelievers in the sight of their Lord: their rejection but adds to (their own) undoing. ( ÓæÑÉ ÝÇØÑ , Fatir, Chapter #35, Verse #39)

We did aforetime give Moses the (Book of) Guidance, and We gave the book in inheritance to the Children of Israel,-
( ÓæÑÉ ÛÇÝÑ , Ghafir, Chapter #40, Verse #53)

Our home (i.e. earth) should be tidy. From an Islamic perspective, this is only possible if the Shari `ah is fulfilled, and humanity lives according to divine law. The Qur'an shows that any attempt to achieve I`mar and prosperity away from divine revelation and guidance will certainly lead to destruction:
"Do they not travel through the earth; and see what was the End of those before them? In strength they tilled the soil and populated it in greater numbers than these have done: there came to them their apostles with Clear (Signs), (which they rejected, to their own destruction): it was not God [Allah] Who wronged them, but they wronged their own souls." (Qur'an, 30:9)
The I`mar of the earth should be in areas and projects that could benefit humanity and not harm her.
Imara demands Shari`ah : The Ethics of Action
Establishing law by Quran,Sunnah(Teaching of Prophet Muhammad sall lahu alaihi wa sallam),Ijma,Qiyas(Anology),Ijtihad,Jihad(Striving),halal,haram-permissible and impermissible,Adl and I'tidal (Justice and Moderation)
Establish Allah's Handiwork
30:30 So set thou thy face steadily and truly to the Faith: (Establish) Allah's handiwork according to the pattern on which He has made mankind: no change (let there be) in the work (wrought) by Allah: that is the standard Religion: but most among mankind understand not.
31 Turn ye back in repentance to Him and fear Him: establish regular prayers and be not ye among those who join gods with Allah,

4.58 Allah doth command you to render back your trusts to those to whom they are due; and when ye judge between man and man that ye judge with justice: verily how excellent is the teaching which He giveth you! for Allah is He who heareth and seeth all things.

8.27 O ye that believe! betray not the trust of Allah and the apostle nor misappropriate knowingly things entrusted to you.

4.135 O ye who believe! stand out firmly for justice as witnesses to Allah even as against yourselves or your parents or your kin and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for Allah can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts) lest ye swerve and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice verily Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.
4:65 But no by thy Lord they can have no (real) Faith until they make thee judge in all disputes between them and find in their souls no resistance against thy decisions but accept them with the fullest conviction.
4:105 We have sent down to thee the Book in truth that thou mightest judge between men as guided by Allah: so be not (used) as an advocate by those who betray their trust.
5:49 And this (He commands): Judge thou between them by what Allah hath revealed and follow not their vain desires but beware of them lest they beguile thee from any of that (teaching) which Allah hath sent down to thee. And if they turn away be assured that for some of their crimes it is Allah's purpose to punish them. And truly most men are rebellious.

Conclusion
The Vicegerency of man with the subjection of resourses for inhabitation to reach excellence in hereafter is the ultimate goal.

"And the believers, the men and the women, are friends protecting each other; they command what is proper and forbid what is improper, keep up prayer and pay the Zakat (welfare due); and they obey God and His Messenger. It is these on whom God will have mercy. Surely, God is All-Mighty, All-Wise. God has promised to the believers, men and women, Gardens beneath which rivers flow, forever therein to dwell, and goodly dwelling-places in the Gardens of Eden, and greater than anything else, God's good pleasure (and acceptance from Him). That is the supreme triumph." (Q 9:71-72)

"And whosoever does a righteous deed, be they male or female, and is a believer, We shall assuredly given them a goodly life to live; and We shall certainly reward them according to the best of what they did." (Q 16:97)

"Men who surrender to God and women who surrender to God, and men who believe and women who believe, and men who obey and women who obey, and men who persevere (in righteousness) and women who persevere, and men who are humble and women who are humble, and men who give aims and women who gives aims, and men who fast and women who fast, and men who guard their modesty and women who guard their modesty, and men who remember God much and women who remember-God has prepared for them forgiveness and a mighty reward." (Q 33:35)

This is how the Qur'an describes the ideal and the model for men and women and the criterion for the Day of Judgement. This defines what is expected of them as Allah's vicegerents. This lays the foundation of their equality in their human roles in the world.
Allah has promised, to those among you who believe and work righteous deeds, that He will, of a surety, grant them in the land, inheritance (of power), as He granted it to those before them; that He will establish in authority their religion - the one which He has chosen for them; and that He will change (their state), after the fear in which they (lived), to one of security and peace: 'They will worship Me (alone) and not associate aught with Me. 'If any do reject Faith after this, they are rebellious and wicked.
( ÓæÑÉ ÇáäæÑ , An-Noor, Chapter #24, Verse #55)
They said: "We have had (nothing but) trouble, both before and after thou camest to us." He said: "It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you inheritors in the earth; that so He may try you by your deeds."
(  ÓæÑÉ ÇáÃÚÑÇÝ  , Al-Araf, Chapter #7, Verse #129)

And We made a people, considered weak (and of no account), inheritors of lands in both east and west, - lands whereon We sent down Our blessings. The fair promise of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because they had patience and constancy, and We levelled to the ground the great works and fine buildings which Pharaoh and his people erected (with such pride).
( ÓæÑÉ ÇáÃÚÑÇÝ , Al-Araf, Chapter #7, Verse #137)
They rejected Him, but We delivered him, and those with him, in the Ark, and We made them inherit (the earth), while We overwhelmed in the flood those who rejected Our Signs. Then see what was the end of those who were warned (but heeded not)!
( ÓæÑÉ íæäÓ , Yunus, Chapter #10, Verse #73)

Al-Tirmidhi HadithHadith 42 Narrated byAl-MiqdadAl-Miqdad heard Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: There will not remain upon the surface of the earth a mud-brick house or a camel's-hair tent but Allah will instill into it the word of Islam, bringing both mighty honour and abject humiliation. Allah will either honour them by making them worthy of it and those whom He humiliates shall have to render submission to it. I said: The religion will then be entirely for Allah.Transmitted by Ahmad

Before this We wrote in the Psalms, after the Message (given to Moses): My servants the righteous, shall inherit the earth."

CAIR-OH: Ohio Muslims Unite Behind Obama

A large majority of Muslim-Americans voted for George W Bush on the road to the White House eight years ago. But now their support seems to be coalescing around an African-American senator, whose first name derives from the Arabic word for blessing. . .

Building common-cause coalitions is one of the ways that Muslim activists believe they can make their votes - and their issues - count more. That is certainly the view of another convert, who is playing a central role in educating Cleveland's Muslim population about the voting process.

Julia Shearson's ancestors may have arrived in the first wave of English settlers to America, but now she is dressed like millions of other Muslim women around the world, and running the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) office in the city. . .

CAIR: Muslim Woman Forced to Leave Mall Over Headscarf

A Muslim housewife says her civil rights were violated when a security guard forced her to leave a shopping mall when she refused to take her religious headscarf off.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Washington-based Muslim civil liberties group, made the incident public Friday. The group has asked the FBI and Louisiana officials to investigate the Feb. 22 incident. The woman and her family, U.S. citizens of Palestinian heritage, are considering legal action. . .

Ibrahim Hooper, a Council on American-Islamic Relations spokesman, said the case opened unprecedented legal questions about hijabs, Muslim woman's head covering. In the past, he said, Muslim women have challenged orders to remove their hijabs by employers and upon being photographed for driver's licenses.

"This is the first time I've seen something this egregious," Hooper said. "This was not only humiliating, there may have been criminal, civil rights violations in this incident."

CAIR-AZ: Jews, Muslims Walk for Peace

As death tolls in the Gaza Strip continued to rise over the weekend, Muslims and Jews in Tucson marched to promote understanding and peace on a local level. . .

Hosam Risha, the executive director of the Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said he hoped government leaders would learn from citizens' ability to get together for the purpose of building peaceful relations.

"If we are going to leave the next generation with anything, let it be causes like this," he said. "We don't want them to inherit death and destruction but peace and the importance of collaboration."

[vinnomot] A national scourge!

http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=25791

Although humorously told, it is a sad yet true phenomena that has been
deep rooted in the work culture of Bangladesh as a whole...

Excerpts..
"
Have you been to some office to resolve a household or personal matter
when you have been told "Kalkey ashen (K-A)? (Come tomorrow!)"

...In Bangladesh, unfortunately, and even to this day, K-A has become a
way of life; telephone connections, electricity service, water supply, gas
bills, car inspections, school admissions, university registrar's offices,
passport office, and on and on.

Imagine this; your telephone bill is grossly over the average and you need
to get it corrected.........In the western world, this simple matter is
taken care of in a few minutes -- over the telephone -- where the service
staff explains all the calls you made and where the charges came
from...for an error....the resolution is immediate with a sincere apology.
Many organisations will even compensate. They call it "service recovery."

What happens in Bangladesh? For one thing, it may take a better part of
the day to even find the office or person responsible for addressing the
discrepancy. You are then bounced around from one office/person to the
next like an electron in search of who "might" be able to assist you....
when you finally discover the right person, the peon casually tells you:
"Char tow chit-ey nai (sir is not in his seat)!" ..............."

two are beyond our comprehension, we must do the best we can with the
third."
