Helping the deprived children

Many of us who go for a morning walk confront two contrasting pictures. One, of students rushing to schools and coaching centers by bus, cycle, car and scooter.

The other picture which makes one sad is of deprived children who move around with large sacks on their shoulders to collect plastic and scrap from the heaps of debris or the leftovers that shop keepers leave outside at closing time.

Children as small as six years are also seen doing all this. Unfortunately, this is the story of all Bangladeshi cities. Why should it happen when our government is not only providing mid day meals but has started evening schools for those who can't go to the school in the morning?

According to me, it is happening because we are happy only with our own progress and are not concerned with what is happening around us.

If we ever engage these children in discussion, we will find that their mothers are working as our domestic help and their fathers are driving rickshaws to take us somewhere.

We don't mind if our own child, after having taken coaching tor a year, which costs anything up to a lakh, suddenly declares that he would like to attempt the exam only next year I have seen parents anxiously escorting their children to examination centres, even if they have to take leave from the office.

But if our domestic help's child stops going to school, we don't have the time to speak to the school authorities. In most cases we don't even bother to know what her children do.

But it makes a big difference when an educated person takes up the cause of such children. We all can help the cause. It simply calls for distributing our love.

What we need to do is to monitor the education of at least one deprived child. Just as all our investments shouldn't be in one portfolio, likewise our love should not be only for our own one or two children. Deprived children will actually fetch us better returns.

শফিকুল ইসলাম জুয়েল: বাজারের দোকানদাররা কেমন যেনো হয়ে গেছে। আগে হাত পাতলে মাছ, মাংস, চাল, ডাল, তেল, সবজিসহ রান্নার সব উপকরণই পাওয়া যেতো। কিš' এখন সেগুলো মেলে না। বরং সাহায্য চাইলে গালিগালাজ শুনতে হয়। তবুও পেটের দায়ে বাজারে যেতে হয়।

নাখালপাড়া রেললাইন বস্তির বাসিন্দা পঞ্চাশোর্ধ ছালেমা বেওয়া গতকাল এভাবেই নিত্যপন্যের দাম বাড়ার প্রতিক্রিয়া জানালেন। বললেন, সারাদিন ভিক্ষা করেও ২০ টাকা পাওয়া যায় না। মেলে না ১ পোয়া চালও।

মোহাম্মদপুর রায়েরবাজারের বস্তিবাসি বৃদ্ধা খোদেজা বিবি বললেন, ধানমন্ডির ১৫ নম্বরে এক সাহেবের বাসায় ছুটা বূয়া হিসেবে কাজ করে মাসে ৫'শ টাকা এবং আরেক বাসায় কাপড় ধুয়ে ও ঘর মুছে মেলে তিন 'শ টাকা। আগে দু'বাড়ি থেকে খাবার মিললেও দু'মাস থেকে তা বন্ধ। বাসায় প্রতিবন্ধি মেয়ে ও অসুস্থ স্বামীকে নিয়ে কীভাবে দিন যায় আল্লাহ ছাড়া কেউ জানে না।

চকবাজারে দীর্ঘদিন ঠেলাগাড়ি চালান বৃদ্ধ আয়নাল হোসেন। দেড় হাজার টাকায় ভাড়া থাকেন আজিমপুরের টিনসেড বাসার একরুমে। স্ত্রী ও বিবাহযোগ্য ২ মেয়েকে নিয়ে তার পরিবার। বললেন, বয়সের ভারে শরীর চলেনা। আগে ভালো আয় আসলেও এখন হয়না। স্ত্রীও অসুস্থ। মেয়েদের ভবিষৎ নিয়ে চিন্তা। এর ওপর খাবারসহ সব পণ্যের অতিরিক্ত দাম। সারাদিনের আয় দিয়ে খাবারের যোগানই মেলেনা। তিনি বললেন, ঈদের পর আর মাংস খাওয়া হয়নি। মাছও কেনা সম্ভব হয়নি।

গাইবান্ধার রিক্সাচালক মুজিবরের মন্তব্য, কোন রাজনৈতিক দলের সরকার ক্ষমতায় তা নিয়ে ভাবিনা। উদ্বিগ্ন থাকি নিত্যপণ্যের চড়াদামে। সুন্দর সুন্দর বুলি আর আইনে সুখ পাইনা। পেট পুরে খেতে পারলেই শান্তি অনুভব করি।

মোহাম্মদপুর মহিলা কলেজের শিক্ষক আব্দুল মজিদ, ইউনাইটেড হসপিটালে কর্মরত মারুফুল হক, শাহবাগ অন্তর রে¯েঁ-ারার জাহিদ হোসেনসহ বাজারের ক্রেতারা বলেন, পণ্য সামগ্রীর মূল্য বৃদ্ধিতে সীমিত আয়ের মানুষ চরম দূর্ভোগে। ব্যবসায়ীরা বলছেন, অতিরিক্ত দামে অধিকাংশ মানুষেরই নাভিঃশ্বাস উঠেছে। গত ২/৩ মাসে নিত্যপণ্যের চাহিদা কমেছে ৩ ভাগের ১ ভাগ।

ডিএমপিতে কর্মরত এক উর্দ্ধতন কর্মকর্তা জানান, নিত্যপণ্যের চড়ামূল্যের প্রভাব সর্বত্রই পড়েছে। গত কয়েক মাসে রাজধানীসহ সারাদেশে খুন, চুরি, ডাকাতি, ছিনতাইসহ নানা অপরাধ অস্বাভাবিকহারে বেড়েছে।

এনিয়ে উদ্বিগ্ন রয়েছে পুলিশ প্রশাসনও।

Bangladeshis should not be pro Paki or Pro Hindustani, they should be pro Bangladeshi. All foregn agents should be sent back to Pakistan and India regardless of their political affiliation. Only pro Bangladeshis will remain in Bangladesh forever.

WILL THE GOVERNMENT CURB AN OVERLY AGGRESSIVE VACCINATION SCHEDULE TO COMBAT RISING AUTISM RATES?

Nixa, MO – Parents of children who regressed into autism after receiving vaccines are expressing cautious optimism that government health officials may at last be catching on to the link between vaccines and autism.

An article published on Huffington Post by investigative journalist David Kirby reported details of a conference call held earlier in March, bringing together federal vaccine safety officials to discuss concerns surrounding mitochondrial dysfunction, autism and vaccines.

The call came on the heels of a concession by the federal government that vaccines lead to regressive autism in nine-year-old Hannah Poling of Atlanta. The ruling is raising many questions, especially in the area of mitochondrial dysfunction, which the government conceded was exacerbated by Hannah's vaccines.

In the article, Kirby stated, "The hot topic of the day was mitochondria - the little powerhouses within each cell that convert food and oxygen into energy." And that, "Some researchers on the call reported that mitochondrial dysfunction is probably much more common than the current estimate of 1-in-4,000 people, making the potential implications for autism staggering."

Of utmost significance are the following points:

Up to 1 in 50 children (2%) may be at risk for mitochondrial dysfunction.
Thimerosal, mercury, aluminum, pollution, pesticides, medicines and prenatal alcohol exposure have all been shown to damage mitochondria.
Up to 20% of all children with autism may have underlying mitochondrial dysfunction.
The CDC is aware of this situation and is immediately taking measures to address the current national vaccine schedule.
The genetic susceptibility for mitochondrial dysfunction is not rare.
This DNA mutation alone may not be enough to confer cellular dysfunction, doctors believe there is an environmental trigger as well.
Children with mitochondrial dysfunction are more likely to regress into autism following a fever and illness from viral infections or a vaccine reaction.
Some changes in the vaccine schedule will almost surely be made. The most difficult decision is how and when to vaccinate children with proven mitochondrial dysfunction.

The National Autism Association (NAA), a parent-led non-profit organization, believes that vaccines have contributed to regressive autism in most children, and that the rise in autism correlates with the increase in vaccinations. "It's apparent that those in a position to bring the truth to light about the vaccine-autism connection might finally be listening to the parents who have witnessed it first-hand," said NAA board chair Scott Bono.

A meeting of the HHS National Vaccine Advisory Committee's Vaccine Safety Working Group will be held in Washington, DC on April 11th. This meeting will be open to the public.
