| In the evening of October 28, 2008, a segment of the Bangladeshi Community living in the
Northern Virginia area met with the representatives from the Jim Moran
Campaign office at 4600 Duke St, Alexandria, VA. Congressman Jim Moran
was scheduled to attend the meeting, but at the last moment, he was
hurriedly called to meet an Adviser of Barack Obama at Charlottesville.
Instead he sent his Campaign Manager Brian Spoon and Deputy Campaign
Manager Claire McIntyre to represent him.
More than 70 volunteers from the Community attended the meeting in spite
of the inclement weather. Several people showed up even after the
meeting was over by 8:00 PM. Ms. Michele Washington from the Obama
Campaign was also present on the occasion.
At the beginning, Mr. Shahjahan Mahmood described the composition of the
Bangladeshi Community - he said that it is a diverse community and most
families of this community belong to the Middle Class category of this
country. The Community leaders then heartily exchanged their feelings
and emotions about the current economic crisis in this country and the
image of this country that has been tarnished globally under the present
regime. They hoped that the Democratic Party would solve these problems
and they vowed to bring the victory for the Democratic Party in the
upcoming election. Brian Spoon then explained the stand of the
Democratic Party and Jim Moran, in particular on various issues. He
appealed everyone to vote on 4th November. He also mentioned that if
some one cannot make on the voting day, he or she can take the advantage
of the early or absentee voting.
It was a hurriedly called meeting. We acknowledge the help of many
people in convening this meeting. Zakir Hossain was the main organizer
of this event and he worked day and night to make it successful. We also
thank Shameem Haider, Kamrul Islam Kamal and Munir Hossain for their
