RE: [vinnomot] Oil price: Crisis of our democratic system!

Dear Mr. Pal,

Nuclear (not nuke or new-killer) electric power generation can only replace fossil power sources, which these two largest democracies have mastery on. Ways have already been innovated by that industry to take care of rdioactive trash and security of the plants. The only thing missing is the political will and educating mass towards that direction. This is not happening because the way 3 bigs have put the entire country behind the steering wheel, similarly the fossil power industry is keeping the world from approaching towards the direction of ultimate solution in the energy sector.

Thanks a lot for your wonderful heads up.

Regards,
KR

Oil price: Crisis of our democratic system!

World economics seems to be tumbling down the hill in 2008. Mortgage market meltdown, acute crisis of food and now rising oil price are all but to clamp nail into the coffin of Uncle Sam. Most surprisingly, the entire crisis had been predicted well in advance, we have been forewarned and yet the world had chosen to ignore ominous signs. We have failed to act accordingly when it was necessary.

By 2006, it was very well known, production of crude oil has reached its peak. Ever widening gap between crude supply and demand was predicted as early as 2004. Deep shore exploration or extracting oil from tar sand was left as only option. Staggering high cost involved to explore this new paradigm of oil was predicted. Despite so much of data was available in 2004-2005 about the possible steep rise of crude oil in 2008, Government of India, China and USA did not bother at all to subsume rising fuel consumption. Instead between 2005 and now, India has seen highest growth of automobiles on the roads. Indian Government continued its unsustainable subsidies on oil. Had the subsidies been lifted, at least high price of petrol which is used by Indian elite class, would have dissuaded many potential auto buyers. US government pursued on the line of bio-fuel as substitute despite warning from the experts that crisis is too impending and ethanol can not replace gasoline even in next ten years. Surprisingly, neither India nor America thought about boosting public transport as alternative solution. Indian Railway expanded only a mere thousand kilometer in last decade and Uncle Sam's all pervading profit first policy forced American public transport system to a gridlock.

American city planning evolved in such a way that right now, it would require infusion of trillions of dollars to expand rail and tramways into newly built settlements. Great American lifestyle built around freedom on wheel is over. Average family income of the American is around $35,000 a year. Assuming on average two per family are employed, it would require 15% of their tax adjustable income just to cover the transport cost. This hardship is on the top of 200% increase in food price! American middle class is shattered with hand to mouth situation without any relief in sight. They are simply roasted by economic disaster which was written on the wall but Bush administration took no tangible step to act on warning.

Whom to blame? It is easy to blame Government because the very human nature is built around denial of our identity to share a failure. Most of the young Americans are go-happy party boys & gals without any concern for politics and policy making. Without a qualmish population, you will never get a conscious Government. The way American politics has evolved, I really do not see much of hope for common people. Politicians have been completely sold out to the lobbyists who are buying loyalty through money power. How will the desire of American common people ever be reflected in American policy making? Hillary talked about common and working people all along her campaign. But what did we see? It costs minimum $250 to listen to her lecture and $5000 to talk to her for a minute! Obama is speaking for change-but he raised his money from quite a large numbers of vested interest groups. Will he ever act against these groups of vested interest? McCain endorsed Bush any way- so from him, no change to halt the current nosedive is expected.

Oil is bankrupting India and United States-two largest democracy on planet earth. If we can not act and move in right direction to combat this energy crisis, this will be the greatest failure of republican system on the earth.
