| Every election is important.
But every few decades, Americans face a more profound choice -- one that calls upon us to rekindle the American spirit and rededicate ourselves to the renewal of our nation.
This is one of those elections.
I hope that America will elect Senator Obama as the next President of the United States. But to truly realize the transformative potential of this election, we need to build a massive wave of Democratic activists that can and will change the outcome up and down the ballot in November.
After the election is over, most of our important decisions as a nation -- from Supreme Court nominations to decisions about war and peace and solutions to the climate crisis -- must go through the United States Senate.

It is hard to overstate the challenges that Barack Obama will face when he becomes our president:
The urgent imperative to develop renewable energy sources to save our planet; an almost six-year war in Iraq no closer to ending than when it began; an economy in which too few are getting ahead; 47 million Americans without health care; and a Supreme Court that's one new justice away from overturning 40 years of law protecting women's, workers' and civil rights.
Overcoming these challenges will require a Senate that's willing to work for change. A radical right wing Senate Republican caucus has filibustered over 70 times so far this Congress -- a record-breaking measure of obstruction unmatched in our republic's 200-plus-year history.
The DSCC is doing all it can to ensure these Republicans won't be standing in the way of progress come Inauguration Day. They are watching every race, and making strategic decisions on where your vital contributions can make the most difference. In 2006, a mere 12,176 votes decided our winning races in Virginia and Montana, and the almost $10 million the DSCC spent likely tipped the balance. Our 2008 races could just as easily turn on a few votes, and your single donation before this deadline - combined with $5 and $20 from thousands of others - could help determine victory or defeat.
